Hi there eveyone,

Newbie here after some advise. Looking for a L322, 2002 - I have found a cheap one but it needs a new torque converter and the radio doesn't work. Is the torque converter a big job?
Thanks
Rich

Torque convertor is a big job and are you sure it's not the gearbox? They are a known problem. Radio is probably a water leak in the rear quarter corroding the connectors.

Thanks. The ad says torque converter, so I guess it must be. How much are the parts approx and what we talking in time to replace. I have a mate who owns a garage and I get cheap labour and supply my own parts. Cheers

It's says gearbox works ok when cold? Thing is its in Rochdale and I'm in Nottingham, I guess that it won't be driveable?

what the ad says doesnt mean alot there arent that many people that can diagnose gear box faults exactly in my experience of trade ,unless it was made by speciallist etc,you need a known rebuilt or new one with warrenty

gearbox works fine when cold seems more like pressure problem than t/c ,t/c are easy fix send it to specialist and they send it back repaired minus £150 onwards ,plus never buy auto box that has signs of blackish oil

It's probably cheap for this reason and probably many others that aren't listed in the advert..... There's plenty around so don't fall in love with the first one you see

Is it a TD6 or a V8?

If it's a TD6 a 'torque converter problem' is a polite way of saying the the transmission sump is full of metallic debris.

If it is a trader I would steer well clear, a torque converter should not be affected by temperature, more likely the gearbox is at fault! I would not be tempted to go any further with this. Let's face it, if it was an easy fix they would have done it themselves!

He is asking £6k, 90000 miles 4.4, trying to weigh up whether it's worth it... If its a £150 fix great, if it's a 2k fix still not too bad. But can I drive it home?

Very valid point mate

The ZF 5HP24 torque converter in the 4.4 (unlike the GM 5L40-E one in the TD6) usually gives you plenty of warning when it's on its way out - the lock-up clutch vibrates when under light load when it's in its 'continuous slip' mode between 30-56mph (not unlike the sound of driving over a cattle grid - but quieter - slowly pulsing on and off). I've just had an (identical) TC re-manufactured by JPAT for £215.

They definitely mean the torque converter and not the transfer box?

The L322 & E53 transmissions are physically different because they have different transfer boxes bolted to them (NV225 vs NV125). Regarding the ZF 5HP24, the E53 4.4 uses the '029' model, for the L322 it's the '032' version and the 4.6 E53 the '034'. The torque converters for the '029' & '032' are the same but not the '034'.
