Took my freelander in for a service and wanted the gear stick changed (as in the whole plastic unit below the terrain response) because it was squeaking in neutral. Got it back this evening and I now can't put it into 6th, 5th is tight but does go in and it's difficult to go in to reverse. No squeak and it's a lot smoother from 1st to 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
The old was ok but the plastic tubing had gone on the spring and it sometimes got sticky which is why I was looking it changed but never had any problems getting in or out of any gear.

Anyone any ideas what's happened? I'm taking it back to garage on Monday but would like to have an inkling if anyone knows anything.
Is it a fault with the part or does it need adjusted some way or has it not been fitted right?

Sounds like an adjustment problem, or it was put back together wrong. I wouldn't touch it, let the garage sort it out.

Thanks for the reply I just hope that it is an adjustment problem and nothing major as it's weird that I had no issues and now I do. It's so annoying and I'm so disappointed that I can't really use my car till they open again on Monday.

Well the gear selector is done via 2 cables. First thing I would do is open the bonnet and look under the airbox with a torch. You should see 2 ball joints which the cables clip on to. Make sure the ball joints are tight and that the cables are fully pushed down on them and not causing a foul condition.

If they check ok then I'd just use my fingernails to pull the the chromed surround around the bottom of the selector lever. If you look down towards the front you will see where the 2 cables should slot into the house with a quick release. My second guess would be that these aren't fully seated and are causing the cable to bow a little as you try to select gear. If that isn't the case then its probably the cables aren't connected correctly inside the selector housing itself, these are again on a ball joint.
