I need some advice please. I know very little about cars and have stumbled upon your website a few times looking for answers... I have a freelander 1.8 2005 petrol thats done 72k.

Problems: rapid ticking noise under bonnet when starting car up when cold. Cam last between 10 seconds and 10 minutes, never usually longer. Do not hear it in cruise.

Expansion tank has cracks on top, losing fluid but nowhere obvious to me. Garage says it is building up pressure (I thought that was normal!)

Been like this since we got the car but ticking now slightly worse. Took it to a garage who tested a few things, confirmed no water in oil (no sign of mayo eithrr) and no obvious oil in the water either. They said one moment it was head gasket, then it wasnt, thrb it was, then it wasnt amd now want me to pay near on 1000 for a head gasket repair even though they couldnt say this was the fault!

Im coming to you guys (hopefully on the right thread) for some clarity really. All the info I have found sounds like it isn't the hg and more an oil getting to the engine problem. I felt very much in the garage they saw a woman with a baby and thought an easy target so before I shell out that money I really dont have, I wanted opinions if u think hg is the cause.

Please help!!!

Just to add, hubby put kseal in expansion tank and it doesnt seem to have lost water since (2 days ago and a big drive done)

Neighbour who is a mechanic (mots mainly) said ticking noise sounds like oil not gettinf to enhine properly
