Just a little update to see if any more thoughts fellas, put in reverse and revved quite high,no drive,f4 flashing on dash an orange car facing down hill with an exclamation mark and an error code up saying p0720 vehicle speed sensor no signal, any thoughts would be appreciated and a big thumbs up to all comments already

Also done the barrel connector test with these results
1-8 590
3-4 590
5-6 590
7-8 1820
9-18 17.5
10-18 17.5
11-18 18.2
12-18 17.3
13-18 17.3
14-18 17.3
15-18 3.2
16-18 3.2
17-18 13.8
Not sure what to make of these readings tbh so would be great if someone does, regards and thanks again if anyone can shine some light

Looks about right to me. If you're not getting F4, then the TCM doesn't see there's an electrical fault, so the problem is mechanical, like the reverse drum brake band has failed, or the reverse piston has cracked, or maybe a combination of both. ;)

Thanks for reply again nodge if I Rev the car quite high while in reverse with no motion then f4 flashes on dash with the amber light of a car going down hill with an explanation mark and throws an error code of p0720

The TCM is smart enough to know that there's an imbalance between the input and output shafts, so it knows something isn't right, which is why it's doing the F4 thing, although that code is probably a crank sensor code.

Cheers nodge for your time and reply again it’s really appreciated, the code is saying it’s speed sensor fault,I’m going to ring an auto gearbox specialist up tomorrow and see what they think and cost wise, not looking forward to it but love me freelander so not sure what to do,I just like that it can be worked on pretty easily and been an hse it’s nice inside and with all that I’ve done to it it’s a bloody good motor now apart from this gearbox issue

As I said before I was considering a freelander 2 but with all the problems with them on this site it looks like they’re as problematic as the freelander 1 tbh

I don't think the FL2 is less reliable than the FL1, just some faults can be difficult to identify and subsequently repair, mainly due to the huge amount of electronics involved.

If I was to look at one nodge what would you say I’d need to look out for as there’s a few nice ones on the autotrader that I’m tempted with but going to see what I’m looking at price wise to get my gearbox done as don’t really want to be rolling around on the floor at this time of year as that’s what’s buggered me knees up from the past lol

Auto box specialist will want somewhere around 700 to 1000 sovs (£) to remove the auto box, fit a service kit and repair the reverse problem, then refit auto box on FL1 and fill with new auto fluid. That's if it needs taken apart to fix, which is likely. They will be able to confirm if it needs taken apart.

After selecting reverse and failing to move, can you select drive and drive forwards without switching the engine off/on?

Hi hippo thanks for reply mate, yes it still drives forward ok in all gears, got it booked into a specialist in two weeks time,£650 + vat :( but gotta be done other wise no motor,if it would have been in the summer it’s a job I could’ve done myself but don’t fancy lying on cold wet floors at this time of the year tbh lol

Will do hippo and may I ask why you asked if it will go forward at all as it still does with no problems so is that a sign of what it may be as ie the brake band or the clutch solenoid, regards

Where are you taking it, out of interest?

Mine would go forwards no problem, if I revved the but off it then slammed to reverse it would move back an inch or so.
Couldn't move it backwards by pushing even in neutral.
Mine was brake band IIRC.
Get the box checked and any other worn stuff done at the same time, saves cash in the long run.

I’m taking it a place called Neil smith automatics,I was recommended there after I rang another place who said they only did manuals but recommend these,ho and mine rolls backwards ok but just no drive at all when reversing and if I Rev mine right up the engine management light ones up with a fault code p720 speed sensor

I was wondering if yer Freelander had spotted a fault it was not happy with, and gave up trying to move itself in any direction until restarted.

I once had 2 abs sensors faulty at once and my Speedo would not work?? Apparently the ecu uses the abs signals to opetate the speedo.. but my auto box was ok... There is a speed sensor in the box also, maybe this has gone faulty..But I'm sure you can test it through the connector barrel for resistance.

Just an update fellas, got it back from Neil smith transmissions from Cannock and all done,it was the brake band that had gone and he changed the filter in the gearbox as well but drives like new again now,so thanks for all help on this issue, hopefully won’t be nothing else major to happen now
