we went off roading and at one point when leaving a real stodgy bit (diff lock used) to get back on the road as i turned on to the road in high range normal the rear drivers wheel started to click quite harshly on turning almost like a ratchet i decided to nurse it steadily home but a mile down the road it corrected it self so we carried on with the afternoon and i drove absolutly fine, until an hour later another stodgy bit i engaged diff lock and the clicking returened and drive to the rear wheels stopped, only drive to the front it seemed (however the rear prop cannot be turned by hand) so im assuming no drive getting to the prop in the first place, again tried to nurse it home with just from wheel drive i could only select diff lock low and had to use 1st on the auto box to get drive and then select through the gears (no initial drive in any other gears whilst stationary) we didnt make it home it jumped out of diff and the selector was unable to go in any of the corner positions we were stuck with no drive at all no handbrake and slight clicking when selecting park from any of the gear positions. No drive forward or back. any idea what could be up or a step by step method to diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like you've either blown a diff or your transfer box is goosed. In the first place I think I would drain the oils from the rear diff and transfer box and see if there is any swarf or other "bits" in the oil.

I'm sure somebody else with more exerience of these things will be along to give you some more guidance.

thanks for that sounds like a good place to start. would you happen to know if the props will turn by hand if the diffs are gone if in neutral

first thing (and easiest) thing to check would be half shaft drive members on the outsides of the hubs. the splines wear and would cause the ratcheting noise

that makes perfect sense to me i'll check that. the noise was coming from the hub area not the diff. does anyone know the main reason why the transfer box will not engage anything is there a particular type of failure that will cause this, it almost as if the engine isnt running does it rely on a vacumn from the manifold??

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have just incurred a problem with my '87 rr classic 3.5 efi auto which sounds very similar to this.
Basically aftr some exuberance in the snow, the low/high range transfer box is remaining in neutral. I can get in low range after a few attempts however but it pops out after a minute or so and I'm back with no drive! It won't engage high range at all.
The main auto box appears to shift as normal when the transfer box engages.

Does anyone know what the fault is and if it's fixable? The fact tht it engages for a bit gives me some hope! Iv Got half a foot of snow to get through!!

Many thanks

The bit about the autobox only engaging drive in first and then you having to up through the gears maually sounds like faliure of your one way sprag clutch in the autobox iteself, if you look under FAQs in on the ashcroft transmissions website it will explain it. Maybee your broke more than one thing on your offroad trip!
