Hi people can anyone tell me what the electrical connection on the fuel pump (injector pump) does its not the fuel cut off solinoid its the other one with around 7 wires in it and goes to a black box around 3" square mounted to the pump i think i may have a dry joint in the connection to the loom can i cut the connector out and re-join the wires it causes real bad running and loss of power but when i move this connector it seems to correct itself please help if you can. Thanks Louis

Ok Louis at that age it's probably an EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) car, so the item you are referring to is almost certainly the throttle servo which is part of the drive-by-wire accelerator pedal. It sounds like a replacement would be a better option.

On a more general front, these vehicles (autobox versions) can seem a bit sluggish as std, but there are two very popular and cheap modifications that transform their performance. They will never be racing cars, but the mods turn them into usable vehicles.

1. De-EGR - there is a circular valve mounted on the exhaust manifold that needs removing and blanking off, kits cost between £5 to £20 depending on how you do it.

2. De-Catt - to achieve this cost-effectively the popular method is to buy a Defender non-catt downpipe ESR2297 for about £20+vat and replace the existing one. Easy job takes about 30mins.

All parts are avail from, amongst others, www.paddockspares.co.uk

Good luck

Dave
