Morning Tomcat.

I spoke to a friend who was at that game. He had to watch the unfolding crisis from the opposite stand. My memory is a bit hazy now but I'm sure he told me there was another gate that would have relieved the pressure but the police inititally feared a pitch invasion or something and shut the gate so no-one could get out and that sealed their fate. South Yorkshire police covering their arses was nothing new though. They were infamous for it, although to be fair tensions were still pretty high even 10 years after the miners strike.
I guess there is more accountability these days. Especially after the miners strike, the police could get away with murder and had the backing of the Establishment.

Knew a couple miners at that time. What the police were doing was bloody horrendous. Never got reported. Nobody would have believed them. But the miners knew so at times gave as good as they got.

I knew a copper on the miners strike, he was from Merseyside Police. He was upset by the way coppers would drop their payslips in front of the miners and laugh. The miners were on the bread line and the coppers were on about £1200 a week with overtime, board and lodgeing and out of area allowances. The culture at the time, encouraged by Maggie, got away with murder.
