My Defender 90 td5 has started to make a noise when its cold. It sounds like a seal (animal). It does it when you start the vehicle up when its been sitting around ( for example over night)... it makes the noise as you pull away up to 30mph then stops. Once the truck is warm it doesnt make the noise.

First thing in the morning when its cold or its been sitting around, it makes the noise when you drive along/ pull away. Sometimes you hear the noise if your turning slightly right or sometimes when your turning slightly left.

The only thing is... sometimes it doesnt make the sound at all.

Checked the wheel bearings. Whatever it is, it sounds either like a vacuum type of sound or something rubber thats rubbing on something.

I cant find where its coming from.

Please Help!?

Is that something i could check myself or do I need to to take it to a Land Rover Dealer? I do as much work on it as I can usually.

Thanks for your help!

Stick your head under the bonnet while someone tries to turn the wheel with the engine running - if there's squealing from the front of the engine it's probably the belt. The adjustment procedure will be in the book.

If it's the belt like 'oxides' said, I have a feeling they are self tensioning, so if it is squeeking it is probably due replacing, or it could be one of the belt pulley bearings squeeking. Easiest (slightly temporary) fix is to put a little squirt of oil on them if you can get to them :)
