Other half currently has the IRD from my freelander laid out in the conservatory!!

He is having trouble removing the bearing from the hypoid gear. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks

Hi, You probably need a puller or hydraulic press. The guy who will know is probably offline at the moment (as the weather is good) I'm sure you'll get some help later.D..

There is no absolutely safe way to do it other than by puller or press. I suggest you take the parts to a willing garage for them to replace them for you. It will save time and grief particularly if you intend fitting a full bearing kit.
There are improvised methods but I wouldn't recommend them to you when for a hopefully small charge a suitable workshop will change them for you.

Many thanks. Have managed to get this off now but it seems we will need some new 'shims' for front diff. Any idea where we could get some and the required part number.

I haven't done the rebuild yet.......

I have sourced some Nylon shims,, might be an easier job.

Do you have an internal micrometer and decent calipers?

Out of curiosty? is your IRD clunking at sudden power on/off?

I feel the front bearings/shims are the primary cause, remaining 5 bearings (2 pair plus pinion should be fine)

Given the nightmare that it was to get off we are just going to replace everything at the same time!!
