Help needed (what 4x4 would you recommend)

As a few of you may know I am thinking of buying a car for doing some off roading and trialing

I have a budget of £3000 max of witch I need the car to be road legal and ready for off roading. From the help I have had so far I’ve come to the conclusion of a few cars that would meet my requirements and budget.

• Range Rover classic
• Range Rover classic bobtail
• Land rover defender 90
• Discovery bobtail/tray back
• Something else

I am a bit confused as most of the cars seen on the list above all seem to have pros and cons.

Range Rover classic / bobtail are said to rust a lot because of there age

Land defenders seem to cost a lot more for what you get, and with budget I would get a car with lots of miles on and possible in poor condition.

Don’t really know anything about discoveries but as they are newer than range rovers there are less likely to rust.

If anybody has any has anything else that they could suggest for what I want to do it would be extremely useful.
(and yes I have thought about Suzuki’s but I generally dislike them)

As you've said the choice is wide and varied and really depends on your definition of off roading. Bobtails are really good for extreme offroading But your insurance will be really high. A 90 RRC or Disco with a 2" lift and a winch will get you round any greenlane and most Pay & Play sites. How much on road driving do you intend to do? The more extreme offroader you make it the less suitable it will be on tarmac.

As said before I hopping to do some trailing on it at my local 4x4 club (All Wheel Drive Club), and after watching some of the events it seems most of the cars have all the stuff (lift, chunky tyres …….)
Also I need to keep the car road legal as I’ll be driving to the events. The furthest event seems to be about 40-50 miles away, so it needs to drivable on the road.
So far I am thinking of getting a bobtail because they seem to be quite cheap and as siad by‘red hand’ they seem to be quite capable.

Looks the dogs bollocks though doesn't it? Bet it's great to be able to get that thing ****ty! Chequer plate hides the panic claw marks well!

I have been told a few times that a range rover bobtail is a very capable car and is very good for extreme off roading. Could anybody tell me why this is

cos its short and has no overhang

Yip, entry, breakover & departure angles are good, & if it's got big springy things, tyres wiv lumps on & a fekin great big V8 it's going to go over bumps innit!
