Hi I am relatively new to freelander ownership only had it a few months its a 53 reg td4. This week it has developed a problem, Its very sluggish and very sluggish to the extent that the slightest slope it drops to about 15mph and does not want to do much over 40 or 50 on the flat and takes ages to get there. and the smoke is that bad you cant really see out the back window. Any ideas please.

My idea is to pop over to the introduce yourself section and properly introduce yourself before you ask all the questions. People soon get up of answering one post wonders ;)

First thing is check your turbo pipes for splits, it sounds turbo related. Look for oil splatter under the bonnet from where it's leaking. Also useful If you have an assistant to rev the engine and you might here a whooshing noise

^^^^ wot he said.

Can happen to any turbo diesel, not just Freelander.

Sounds like an air intake hose. Most likely the right angle one on the right of the engine as you look at it, not an expensive part to buy. It is a common one to go, or so I was told by a land rover specialist.

OK cheers guys there is no whooshing noises and I have had all of the boost pipes taken off and inspected few rub marks but no holes or splits.

The EGR has been blanked off with a unit and its got a fueling chip thing both of which have been on for 200 miles with no problems. and been removed and problem is still there.. Just having turbo removed checked changed at the moment to try that.

maybe air-intake-temp sensor ?

'Singvogel' mentioned:
When that sensor goes wrong you can get all sorts of faults - I had at various times:

Smoke
Limp mode/lack of pulling power
EML

Intermittant and very annoying - cleaning and or wiggling it about was a temporary fix - eventually cured by replacing the thing.

This sounds like a choked crankcase breather filter located under the air filter casing. Do a searchand youl find plenty info on here. Its cheap to buy a replacement and approx 30 mins to do. You can go for changing to the upgraded breather by bmw which means you no longer have to change the breather filter. Avoid driving until you fix this as it can lead to turbo damage. Some folks have succesfully cleaned the filter in petrol etc but for me its so cheap you may as well buy new.

there have been instances where the turbo/ air hoses have become delaminated and obstructing airflow, its worth taking them off and checking inside,

All boost pipes have been taken off and inspected cant see any faults though.
Turbo has been taken off and changed for a good second hand one and still the same. Having p1e30 code has popped up. checked vacuum at the boost control valve and when throttle is blipped the linkage moves to change the turbo vaines. Crank case filter has also been changed

Sounds like you have an idea what you are doing so I hope this doesn't sound disrespectful, but have you checked the air filter?
