Hello,

the first thing on my mind would be to ensure that the man who is selling the landy has some form of paper evidence of the work that has supposed to have been carried out, whether it be receipts for parts or a bill from a garage if he's not done it himself. Looking at the pictures, it looks very tidy and very straight. I'd ask him to provide pictures of the chassis, bulk head and engine though. if the chassis looks rust free (I expect it will be in that kind of climate) and there are no holes in the bulkhead you should be looking at a good vehicle. Beware though that chequer plate (the silver panels all over the landy) are often used to cover body damage or rust. If there's oil all over the engine, it's shot but if it looks pretty clean it'll probably be in good shape - ask him to make a video of it starting and revving. It wouldn't surprise me if it's been made up from parts of all the defenders that are stolen over here.

How much is he asking for it in uk pounds?

Good idea on the video recording. It did play up on my mind that those plates might be to hide rust and such. A question for you, let’s assume they is rust all over, can the chequer plate hold everything together for the next 10 years or so?
Apparently he did most of his repair in a garage and I was told he kept all receipts knowing serious buyers would be interested in them and it surely helps with the buying decision too.
Looks like I’ll have to dive underneath the car with my torch for further inspection.
He’s asking for GBP5400.

No, or at least very unlikely. If he's just put plates over the top of the floorpan there willl be galvanic corrosion between the steel parts (floorpan, footwells, seat bases) and the alloy checker plate), especially if he's used any fasteners between the plate and the steel. Same anywhere else, where two dissimilar metals come into contact there will be corrosion eventually.

He's having a laugh ... though I guess rice might be a regional thing and if it's a rare item out there it might be worth it.

Seems to me you might get a better one from UK and have it shipped out ... though I dunno about local import taxes etc.
