Hi, I need some input. I was driving my 110 today, it has the 19j 2.5TD engine. All was well when suddenly it went down on power, running rough and lots of black smoke!!!. When I came to a junction etc it cut out, would`nt idle or very erratic. It would start again but still lots of black smoke on acceleration, but way down on power.
Any suggestions as I need to get this sorted asap.
Cheers

ps when it is ticking over there seems to be a loud popping noise from turbo air intake on side of wing, worse if you take of pipe from air box to turbo.

Remove cap on top of rocker box, if a lot of blowing is happening suspect cracked piston,my old 19j still ran with all 4 cracked two of them all the way accros,if so its 200 time

Could be a valve or many gone.

Don't drive it or start it up. Get it trailered to a mechanic. If it is, trying to use it will only cause more damage. Possibly destroy the pistons as mentioned by tottot above.

How old is the timing belt?

ahhhh the 19j i hate that engine ever since o got my 90 i hated it not a good track record.
As soon as i had a problem with my temp getting a little hot(never overheated).
I bought a 200 then the day came when i pulled up at a set of lights n the revs dropped very low, but it never stalled alt light came on then went off that was it, got it home and took the engine out..
Never have checked to see if i had the good engine or the bad maybe one day i will, still got the old lump though.
HOPE ITS NOT THAT BAD MATE will be keeping a close eye on this thread..

you can by a decent 200 tdi from disco for £200 a bit of hassel fitting but problem sorted
What he said.

I paid £250 for mine, but got pretty much everything under the bonnet. This meant I had plenty of pipes and tubes, the fuel filter, the air filter, and so on, to help with the conversion. I took a week off work to do it and despite never having attempted anything like it before, comfortably did the swap-over in that time.

Hi chaps, Thanx for all replies. Having been working on it all day. Checked timing incase it jumped a tooth . Timing all okay. Changed turbo with a spare i had, problem still there. I have a spare injection pump, so will be trying that tomorrow. When I started it, on looking at pump, if you had move throttle by hand , it moves about 1/2 way before anything happens with engine rev`s, then there`s oodles of black smoke from arse end. So I `m thinking somethings gone tits up in pump.

I`m sure nothing major has gone wrong with valves as they are all new and guides. And there is no worrying sounds from engine.

If all else fails have spare engine to shove straight in, not a 200 tdi, too much work, besides I like the 19j engines, prior to this mishap, the current engine has just clocked 157,000, pulled well up hills and cruised happily at 65 - 70 on motorways.

I`ll keep you posted.

Just a further update. Took cylinder head off, gasket blown between cylinders 3 and 4. Checked piston tops all looked okay, no excessive movement. Put on new head gasket and reassembled. Started her up, piles of blue smoke, no go it what so ever, lots of vapours from oil filler cap.
Decided enough was enough, took out engine, replaced with spare, it started 3 turn of the key. All ok so far.

Had a look at old engine, oil all around back of fly wheel, presume from rear crankshaft seal. So I think it had it`s lot.

See how long this one lasts!!!!!!!!
