Hi, Ive got a 1999 td5 which up untill yesterday was great untill I pulled away and it felt like it had a misfire,on tick over it is fine when you rev it at stand still it is fine but when you get to 2k in 2nd gear it starts to hold back if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

I had avery similar problem with mine about 3-4 months ago, it was awful, it was almost as if it was running on 3 cylinders, juddering, spluttering and a severe lack of power !! I would stop, switch off and re-start and it would be fine again for 10 miles or so . . .

Anyway to cut a long story short it was the wiring loom that feeds teh injectors !!

Althogh the injectors are supplied with fuel at very high pressure from a mechanical pump, the actual burst of fuel and the timing of the same is controlled electronically !
Aparently oil seeps from the injector 'valves' and works its way up the loom until it reaches the connector block where it causes a bad connection ?

New loom (£34) 15 mins to fit and the problem is completly cured !!!

May not be what your problem is, but worth checking out !

the TD5 turbo should be delivering full boost at 2100 revs, if there is an air leak then it wont pressurise the charge air to the same degree = less power.

just a thought... hoses have been known to colapse internally have a good feel and listen?

got any more information??

as Steve said...

your TD5 being a 1999 will have the older style injector loom.. slip off the battery cover and whip out the ecu, pull out the multiplug and clean the oil off with some WD40 and rags. blow dry with an airline of you have one...

it does not need to be replaced but if this cures the problem, just be aware that it will need cleaning periodically...

There was oil in the red plug so I cleaned that and dried it out I checked the turbo hoses all ok and I changed the fuel filter I took the car for a test drive and it cut out and will not start now. Is there anyway of testing the fuel pump and the air flow meter ?

Jim- maybe the fuel lines have air in after changing the fuel filter. If you turn ign on and depress accel pedal 5 times, it will enter a purge and prime mode and should get air out of system. Maybe the fuel pump is squealing a bit now? This would indicate air. Otherwise the pump is U/S and needs changing. TD5 will run with NO pump at all (not well) as long as it remains primed. If you have oil in red plug, then the injection loom needs changing as the oil will have tracked all the way through from the head. It will also run with air flow completely U/S or not even plugged in (again not well) but faulty air flow will give hesitation/missing at higher revs under load. Only way to test pump is with a pressure gauge unless I am mistaken.

Cheers Andy when I try to prime the pump Ive read that I should be able to hear the pump but there is no noise at all would this indicate a faulty pump ? and would this be an easy job to do ?

If you get someone to turn the ignition on while putting your head under the back by the tank, you should hear the pump for a few seconds. Normally when the filter has been changed it will be a very noticeable squeal for a while. If you cannot hear anything at all I would check the fuse, then suspect the pump. If you set it to prime mode it will run and purge until you stop it so you can check it yourself.

When Ive tried the priming procedure I cant even hear the pump which make me think it could be that the fuse is ok.

It is worth physically checking the fuse before going for a faulty pump.
The electrical connector on the bottom of the filter is a moisture sensor and often fails. Many people disconnect/cut the wires as the light on the dash can come on for no reason.

Hi,
I had the same symptoms on my 2000 TD5, there was oil in the injector loom which was changed but with no improvement. To cut a long & expensive story short it came down to a seized waste gate control valve on the turbo causing the turbo to over pressure. It can easily be checked by removing the engine cover & watching the control rod on the turbo, if it doesn't move as the rpm increases then investigate from there.
Hope this is useful.

Thanks for the advice everyone Ive just had a land rover mechanic round who has diagnosed the problem as a faulty fuel pump so if anyone has one at reasonable price let me know.

Thanks
