Hi, i'm new to 4x4's and auto's. I bought a 1997 p38 auto 2.5 diesel and was told that the rough gear change was down to the car needing an oil change. I've checked the oil levels in both gear box and engine and although low they are within the dip stick markers.
The car when changing up from lower gears and down from higher gears jolts and clunks, i'm suspecting this is not down to oil levels and possibly is the gear box and/or drive shaft? any advice would be greatly appreciated and hopefully i've not been seen off!

Oil change is a good place to start. Do a search as there's a refill proceedure that needs to be followed.

I tell you what it is but I don't know :p :welcome:

The transfer box chain stretches and bangs , diesels do kill auto boxes from time to time.

cheers guys, can the transfer box chain be adjusted or is that a replacement job?

Replacement. Have you checked your propshaft u/j's? While you are under you can check for excessive backlash in the transfer box .Set suspension to high, use axle stands for safety, release hand brake and get yourself under.:):welcome2:

+1 to the UJ's and change the oil and filter in the auto box, change the oil in the transfer box and diffs, They do tend to clunk a bit on down shifts from time to time even when all is good, maybe a sign of a sticky valve block in the gearbox. A dose of Lucas Transmission fix might help.

Welcome, kindly ask butler to do as suggested twice within few 100 miles and take it from there :)
