Hi. Can anyone please help if you know of any surplus Camshaft (STC 2137) for the Range ROver P38 DSE with the BMW M51 engine. Thank you all.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this will make you spew, if you had posted yesterday i had one, it went to the scrapyard this morning.

I'm not sure but I would imagine that the RR camshaft is different. At least it should be!! It should be profiled to give better torque low down than the car engines. It would be crazy of LR not to have done this.
Check out the BMW M51 engine on wikipeia for the various specs. If you do decide on a car cam go for one from a 525tds.

That was my thought, hence my earlier comment, but I couldn't find torque maps to support it.

I honestly cant say for fact they are the same, however i have the said car cam in my rangie and have found no difference at all, and i am towing everyday with it, it actually feels better to me than the original, maybe cos my original one was worn out though lol.

Hi Rob. Do you have an email for Tiger export/import? All I know is that the engine is the same for the BMW 525tds (M51). Someone suggested it's the same one installed on the vauxhaul Omega. I'm not sure though if there's any diffrence in performance when installing road cams as compared to the ones originally fitted on the P38 DSE? Your thoughts...

I'm really hoping to get a good condition unit from the breakers since the price on the brand new unit are way too expensive and that's not including shipping to Manila, Philippines..Whew!

Hi gav. Thanks for the link. I've tried all of them here in the Philippines. They don't usually stock-up on these parts. Mostly serviceable items only. I have to source it elsewhere, hopefully from a good source breaker in the UK.

I remember coming across a post years ago from some guy who really knew what he was talking about on the M51 engine - I think it was on an omega forum. The RR version of the M51 is smack in the middle of the power range between the omega and 525tds engines at 136bhp. The peak torque figure is similar but the curve it is shifted down the rev range.

But I unfortunately don't remember whether this was due to fuel map or cam.

It just doesn't make sense that they wouldn't re profile the cam to take advantage of the physically improved low rev breathing available by that method for little development cost.

With regard to people not noticing the difference, I suppose there are so many variables particularly with chipping and nobody has a new engine available to do a direct comparison
