ECU bits.jpg
Hi Guys,
I have replaced my ecu on my 2002 freelander 1 td4 and body control unit and I now have to find where these two units are located to replace them, can anyone help??

Th e black one on 433.92 MHz which is in the amateur band is the one that controls central locking and if me or any ham is transmitting near that frequency you will never unlock it lol

White module is up in dashboard above the clutch pedal and is a swine to do - hope you've got the matching engine ecu and key transponders to go with that module

Remote receiver is on top of the instrument pack

I couldn't see it above the clutch pedal when I looked earlier. I've found where the green small unit goes, there's a cracking you tube video on how to access it.. so only the big one left!!
Can you explain how you managed to change the unit??

I'm assuming it's a left hand drive vehicle. If so it's nowhere near the clutch. It's basically at the back of the dash, just right of the stereo. It's very difficult to get at without taking most of the dash out.

The EWS will have two torx security bolts holding it in place, the torx is the one with the tiny nipple in the centre. It is a TS30 5 point, the R40 is a little easy to get to but not by much.

I managed to get the new one in place without taking the old one out, total nightmare. I took the centre console out and spent quite a bit of buggering around trying to get the control unit out but to no avail, its a massive job to take the dashboard out from what I could see. however the plug came off with a few minutes work and the new unit sits quite happily at the back of the radio and works fine. The most time consuming bit was the ignition. I initially tried to swap all the electronics across from the new system to the old, but the key wouldn't start the vehicle so I made the assumption that the key itself must be chipped to the electronic ignition. I had to cut a slot into the rounded top of the bolts holding the ignition onto the steering wheel shaft, it took almost two hours with a hacksaw blade... but I managed and unscrewed it..
so that's it replaced and the entire electrical system working...except for the bloody mirrors which seem to randomly open and close, so answers on a postcard on that one please!!
Thank you for your help!!

In case anybody struggles, in a TD4 LHD take out the radio and the aircon control.
Say some choice words that I won't translate. Loosen the cable that is at the back of the radio above. once you have the first nut out ( 1/4" mini ratchet 10mm socket) losen the one that get in the way in the back, lift the EWS and give it a turn CCW. now you can at last get at the second nut.
Say more choice words and change it. Now proceed to engine ECU.

As far as I am aware the 'black one',is a generic radio receiver and contains no coding. Coding is in key chip, EWS and Ecu and only these three need to be matched / changed.

Yes, didn't see the need to change the receiver myself. My client had a dead engine ECU so I had to change the EWS.
