Unlikely to be a driveshaft. The IRD is a common source of noise. So it's a good idea change the oil in the IRD and check what it looks like. The VCU support bearings can grind quite loudly.
Wheel bearings can make noise too.
Thanks as ever for the advise.
Its got mot at 10am tomorrow so im sure they will inform me of what it is if its a problem.

Hi guys yaaay 3 amigos gone.
However mot failed on
1 exhaust emissions at idle excessive
2 parking brake efficiency below requirements
3 mechanical brake component has restricted free movement off side rear
4 parking brake lever has no reserce travel.
So what advise do u guys offer.
Tester says emissions fail prob head gasket?

Mine just failed on rear brakes. I had a weeping cylinder and the shoes were low - so I replaced everything (except for the adjusters) on both sides. All up about £150. Guys up at your latitude say that they need to replace the short brake pipe between cylinder and hose because they will be corroded - which I believe you've already experienced with the ABS change - they add to the price, but presumably you'll only need another 1. I suppose you may have issues with the hand brake cable going by the fail descriptions - others may have experience.

Be interesting if others think HGF will cause emissions fail.

Welcome to the Zone. There are a number of independent LR services available near you - Max 4x4 near Bromsgrove seem to be ok but I'm miles away in the north and never tried them. Indy place in Northallerton charged me £50 for a diagnostics printed read-out on a LR last year.

One thing I can practically guarantee you is that this IS NOT A FAILED HEAD GASKET! This sounds like lazy mechanic talk. They'll probably also encourage you to replace the Lambda sensor too (whether it needs it or not) and then replace the catalyst...

Best start with first principles: can you post the emissions results?

The hand brake efficiency is almost certainly related to point 3 and likely to explain point 4. Thing to do here is to take the drums off and inspect the mechanisms, clean them up, and if the hand brake cables have stretched, replace them (as is implicated by point (4)).

Doesn't sound too bad if I am honest - and like I say, the emissions may be straightforward to fix if we know what/how it failed idle emissions :)

Having an emission fail can be daunting. However it depends on the actual reason for the fail, as to how easy it is to sort out. The HG as Rob said, isn't likely to be the cause.

Thanks as ever guys.
Got mot done although only just passed emmissions this time.
I took off hub and found auto adjuster was stiff and hard to move.
Removed it and left soaking in wd overnight.
Clean up n adjusted all good.
However would like emmissions sorted asap.
So heres my fail readings for your advise.
Fast idle
Co max 0.30% 0.46%
Hc 200ppm 95 ppm
Second fast idle
0.41%
69ppm
Lambda 1.00 on both
Natural idle
Co max 0.50% 0.34%

Your HC is to high. When were the plugs last changed?
The high CO can be down to bad injectors (unlikely) a failing O2 sensor or the cat past its best.

Nodge 68.
Thanks for swift input.
Dont know on plugs as just bought the beauty.
Will take a look n change if required.
How would i go about testing an 02 sensor?
Im guessing cat would be exhaust section change??

Plugs or leads are the most common cause of high HC (hydrocarbons). Basically whenever fuel isn't burned completely, the HC will be high. For reference, my old FL1 V6 (now the mother in law's) produced 17 ppm HC on it's MOT test in October. The CO was 0.01% with a Lamda ratio of 1, which is what I'd expect from a modern sequential injection engine in good working condition.

The O2 sensor is cheap enough to replace, unless you have access to a code reader with live data capability.

My pscan.eu has the live data facility, and you can see whether the lambda sensor is giving an appropriate signal. As Nodge rightly says, high HC simply means inadequate fuel burn - which may also mean that the engine is being relatively over-fuelled relative to the amount of air coming in. This can occasionally be something as simple as a dirty air filter or partially blocked air intake. Best check all the simple things first, as it can save £££s :)

Right guys once again i call upon your profound knowledge of our beasts.
Ive found shes losing water from expansion tank.
Ive checked pipes rad footwell for damp.
Cant find any drips.
Checked around water pump all good.
No mayonase in oil filler cap or exp tank.
Very slight white from exhaust but its freezing cold tonight.
Temp gauge halfway as norm.
Will this relate to earlier post about co emissions etc on mot?
Cant find any sign of leakage on floor under car.
Had it running for 1 hour.
No coolant lost.
So seems to be when im actually driving her??

Check the inlet manifold seal for leaking coolant into the inlet tract.

Also check the expansion tank for cracking around the cap thead. This is a common failure but thankfully tanks are cheap and plentiful.
