My 1996 p38 2.5 deisel is making an awful noise. a very loud metallic squeek!

Only happens when doing 15 to 20 mph when pulling away, doesnt do it when braking or free wheeling or letting off throttle and allowing to slow, just when pulling away. As soon as you hit 20mph it goes away????

I first thought it was brake / wheel orientated as it gets faster as the car accelerates then disapears. But now think the noise is coming fom underneath.

Have tried just turning up stereo but worried its something major.

Any ideas greatly received.

had a squeek on mine, turned out to be brake calipers, i also put some copper grease around wheel bearing outer, seemed to stop the squeak!

I had that problem with mine. it was a front caliper jammed. the sliders on the caliper sized. easy enough job to fix. but worth slipping the wheels off and checking before it runs a set of pads out.

the slides that seize are the same one on all the calipers, they also use them on the rover 75 front. its a manufacture problem in the drilling of the casting. i had to heat mine up with a blow torch to get em free. ideally it could do with boring out a fraction to give it some room!!

for replacement slide pins go to scrap yard and hobble past a 75, put a few in your pocket. you'll need 4 if your gonna do em all

thanks for your replies guys. Im going to pop the wheel off over the weekend and have a look. Was getting concerned as it only seems to happen when pulling away under power. If free wheeling it doesnt happen only when you putyour foot down.

tried free wheeling down to 5mph without using brakes and then as soon as i get the power on it starts to squeek and its getting worse.
