my dream landy is a 90 TD5 XS COUNTY STATION WAGON im sort of a new arrival in the landy loving community, now what does the "XS" mean, is it just extras? thanks will

XS means xylophone shelf, which tells other road users that your vehicle has a factory fitted xylophone shelf. The boffins at Land Rover think of everything, and came up with the idea when Norbert Bogswerthy, the world famous xylophone player, wouldn't buy a Land Rover till they designed and fitted a special shelf to house his ever present xylophone.

Nahg your wrong, XS is LR terms for 'Excess', abrev'd. Cos it is what the insurers immediately think of when you mention it, and went theft insurance on it.

My dad has a TD5 110 SW for sale, its a county but has air con, CD player, and most the other bits anyway. Turns out it cheaper to tick all the boxes than to get one with the xylophone shelf badge.

And soon as were poking fun, my defender TD has a factory fitted Trim Deficency. Its all bare alooomminum and rust where the once was steel.

And on an actual serious note, I think the XS models have things like traction control (!) and other funny electrics, like as was said Air Con, etc. Remote central Locking. I can't actually imagine them being that much more expensive to insure, especially if you are older than 19 unlike myself
