Help! - GearStick stuck in Neutral and will not move.
Hi, I had not started or moved my LandRover for a few months and this past weekend went to start her up and in checking she was out of gear before starting I could not move the gear stick. It wobbles slightly but no movement down below. I started her up with the clutch in just in case in gear and released the clutch and it looks as though she's in Neutral (N) however I cannot get the gear stick to move to then engage a gear.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this or has anyone experienced a similar issue ?

I have searched and cannot find any info on this problem or a cause/resolution.

Its a 1985 110 with a 3.5 V8 and I believe an LT85 Gearbox.

I have tried moving with the engine on and off, rocking her back and forth, clutch in and out, left the engine running for about 20 mins in case oil pressure or something was an issue, I can move the Hi Low stick just fine and no issues, but still I cannot get the main gearstick to move or engage a gear. It does not even freely move in Neutral it seems as if it is stuck.

Can anyone help ?

The LT 85 is renown as a very strong gearbox, they are prone to two problems, premature wear of the 1-2 selector fork and premature wear in the 5 main bearings, this is due to the fact that the LT 85 has helical gears which produce end thrust but the bearings are all ball bearings as opposed to taper roller bearings.
(From the internet)

all gear boxes are helical cut gears apart from some with sliding reverse idlers where idler is straight cut ,whine can be heard with cars with these,lt 85 is an old design with 4 selector shafts ,gear stick sits and moves along selector jaws ,it can come out and get stuck between or infront or behind jawsmove gear stick from lower, undo 4 x bolt holding selector housing carefully remove as there are 4 x springs with washers top/bottom pressing on stick cross shaft ,remove lower stick check jaws ,they are roll pinned to selector shaft ensure all are in line and retry with lower stick loosely to see if selection can now be made

Hi, Firstly it turns out I have an LT77 Gearbox. I have removed the gators and the gearstick housing. Cannot see the issue and think I may have to dismantle further. The ring link that the bottom of the gear stick goes into looks OK but the pole that then goes through under the high/low stick looks orangy and I am guessing rust may be the issue. I have a photo of what I have found so far and am trying to attach this. I am not sure where to go from here. Thinking that I should try and put oil into all the 3 filler holes to ensure they are at the full level and then continuously wiggle and move the gear stick as much as possible to free it up. Does that sound like a good idea ?

remove the top completely 4 x bolts holding it to gear box ,you can check gearbox top then and clean it up ,then check to see if youve pulled selector shaft selector pin between the selector forks ,the 3 selectors line up next to each other pin slides across jaws in forks , its sometimes possible by removing interlock plate on top of gear box casing (2x bolt) and careful turning and pushing selector shaft to get selector pin back in jaws

Hi, Firstly, thank you all for your help and I believe I have good news. On further removal of the transfer stick and exposing more of the rod, I managed to clean it up, remove grit, dirt etc, rust from the rod and used a lot of WD40. I have uploaded a second photo of how it currently looks, it much better even though currently almost swimming in the WD40.
Anyway I tested the movement and it is a lot free'er and I can now select gears. :) As such I believe the issue is now resolved.

However before I reseal the housing's back down, should the rod be coated in an oil or covered in Grease ?

Also the oil in the gearbox and transfer box does it matter what type of oil ? Is Engine 15/40 OK ? (I do not know much about this stuff and oil is oil ?? ) Does it matter ?

Thank you.

aha. well i think i have worked out what screwed me up last weekend!!! exactly the same on my lt77 on the td.

have to have a look at the weekend.though i suspect mine will not be such an easy fix.

you have removed turret with lower lever ? on top of box (under the turret)should be yoke with grub screw that can come loose ,if secure you need to remove selector housing 4 bolts to rear gear box housing ,shaft in top housing just removed can break roll pin holding quadrant at rear can snap ,as can roll pin holding yoke on selector shaft in gear box , if they are all good, it may be youve pulled pin on selector shaft in gear box of which rear is visible in rear housing of gear box has pulled past the selector forks ,there are three selector forks with jaws that sit next to each other rotating pin by pushing lever either side aligns pin with one of 3 jaws so you can then select forward/backward a gear ,it can be put back in by judicial movement of selector shaft to get box in neutral and then removing interlock ontop of box to 10mm headed bolts selector shaft can be rotated and shaft interlock and pin realigned

gear stick bolts to lower lever which pivots in turret ,turret bolts to top selector housing,if you look at pics with selector shaft with the two slector forks on if you can see pin and interlock with slot in it ,the pin holding it on top of main case is held in with two bolts also visible in one of the pictures ,why hes heating bearings i dont know as its unnecessary
