I Have a 2004 Freelander HSE that has about 103,000 on the clock thats just started cutting out.
Over the last month I have changed all the filters with the exception of the fuel one.
Recently It has been juddering slightly when it is first started, and if you rev the engine you get a little smoke, which clears after a while, then it drives fine.
On Tuesday I did about 70 miles in at and the engine management light flickered and the engine cut out. I started it back up again and drove it off the main road where it cut out again. I left it half an hour and started it up again, it drove about 200 yards and cut out again, so I called green flag. The engineer that came out was fairly young (in his early twenties) and seemed to think it could be one of the injectors playing up. So I waited to be trailered home. When I got back I stared it up, but it took about 3 restarts to get it back onto my drive. After speaking to the recovery mechanic who brought me back, he seemed to think it was more likely to be the fuel pump rather than the injectors.
I have spoken to a local mechanic who recommended putting a strong dose of diesel injector cleaner into the tank (a full container to about 1/4 of a tank of fuel), and blowing it through for about 1/2 an hour.
I have replaced the fuel filter this morning, and followed the mechanics instructions with the injector cleaner. The engine blew out a bit of whitish smoke to start, and quite a bit of black smoke when the engine was over revved, then it all calmed down and it seemed to be turning over fine.
I Took it for a drive around the block which is about a mile, and it was fine until I was outside my front gate, where I saw the engine management light flickered again and the engine cut out. It started up first time again, then cut out when I went into gear to go forwards. I am planning on looking at it again tomorrow, where I may see how dirty the manifold is and clean the EGR with some EGR Valve cleaner.
Is there anything else I can test whilst I'm doing this, and can anybody think what else it may be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Posted the above in he wrong section,
Since the first post I have done the following:

Replaced the inline fuel filter
Cleaned out the manifold (Which was really coked up)
Cleaned the ERG
Discovered 1 broken plug on the 1st glow plug.
Added more injector cleaner.

The car ran okay for a day or so, then I had to do a trip to London and back (75 miles ew)
The car was fine until the outskirts of london, where it began to struggle again, and stall.
It seemed okay with my foot to the floor on the motorway, but when I slowed down or stopped in traffic it started to flutter and cut out.

When I came back I replaced the fuel pump, and since that its got worse. It doesn't always cut out, but the engine management light keeps flashing on, it looses power and it goes out, then its okay for a couple of mins, then it repeats itself.

Im thinking its either :

A faulty Injector
A faulty connection/sensor
Air/or hole in fuel or cooling system.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Could be the wiring to the low pressure pump or the connector. Start it up and give them a wiggle, see what happens.
Also the throttle position valve (thingy?) can give issues. Plus there was a post on here about seals in or around the high pressure fuel pump. Have a search you should find it.
Many things to try, and I'm sure you will be given more options.
Best of luck.
Mike

Thanks, Skinny Mike. Any other suggestions are appreciated. I could really do with getting this fixed over the weekend.

At that sort of mileage I'd have changed the fuel pump at the same time I'd changed the fuel filter ( OEM or genuine part only) You could try unplugging the MAF and see if the fault clears, if it does this points to a faulty MAF.

take the plug off the high pressure sensor and give it a clean with contact cleaner.plug it in and out a few times and see if that works. mine was juddering like crzy for a while.changed everything and it turned out to be that

I'll try that as my mechanic cannot look at it till next week, I've been waiting a week and a half, but he's been changing his ramps.

Im going to have another look at it over the weekend.

Whats the best way to check the injectors?

Whats the best way to check the injectors?

Using a Autologic machine/software.

There are rough & ready methods that some have used, but the best way is to get a diesel specialist check them. I used an independent LR specialist not very local to me. Happy though with the results.

As they compensate for each other it is very difficult even for then with a machine to work out which ones need replacing.

When mine were done they changed no 4 & 1 before finding the fault in no 3. Now they are all pretty well matched.

No more smoking.
