They aren't that rare. I have had two happen to me, and repaired the damage caused by several others.
We aren't trying to scare him, just making him aware that there are possible issues that can destroy his engine, and make sure he watches out for them, and especially doesn't overfill with oil, which is easily done on some modern engines.
Hi
I understand- but it’s not the first likely concern with his or my issue - for example my defender has been serviced and has no other issues - the engine is settled. I press my break the engine stops and the key does not stop it.
It’s not an issue of my engine burning it’s own fuel etc.....it would be handy the break itself stopping the engine in that case lol
I know it’s hwlpful for us all to be aware of the many potential dangers but actually sometimes on this and other forums it feels this is the first possibility and it is (for us newbies) a bit scary.

It is highly likely in your case, and his, that the issue is purely an electronic glitch. Modern vehicles are like that, vastly overcomplicated.

But also worth being aware of other potential issues, so you can take preventative measures.

The only thing I have changed are the lights - all around and a new switch that came with the lights. The old switch was for a trailer also (indicator would flash and the trailer light would come on)...thought it might be related....might swop over again.
I think you've put your finger on the problem here. Trailer system being connected to the brake light switch one way or another.
