Hi Guys,

Just got to work after leaving the defender 90 (200tdi) on the side of the road, i'll pick it up later:confused:!! So driving to work as normal when pulling off from a junction there was a bang and no drive. Engine is still running and you can get it into gear but does not engage. Any ideas? My first thought was clutch but now thinking about it I can't imagine it being that I'm now filled with dread as what it could be. I just need some guidance as what people think before I have a look tonight.

Cheers in advance for any help.

Ed

Thanks guys for the fast response. I put it in diff lock and still the same no drive and it was clunky before. Does that change the prognosis or is it likely to be the clutch centre plate?

remove rear pto cov4er on t/box and check the shaft spines ,carefuuly if you use engine to prove drive not getting to input gear while gearbox shaft spinning ,also can you change gear with no clutch use if clutch center gone using pedal wont make any difference if out put shaft it will

Im with james, similar thing happened to one of our vehicles, turned out to be the center of the clutch had sheered off. good luck

Just one thing to add, if it is a propshaft that bust, don't drive it home with the pieces flapping around underneath, that's bound to damage something or cause an accident.

if its still there when he gets back

wouldnt leave my fender at the side of the road round ere pikeys would have it away within the hour.

Cheers guys for all the help. I haven't had a chance to look at it this evening. It was still there when I went to pick it up. But on the Isle of Wight pikies are one thing we are short of, luckily. I shall remove the pto cover tomorrow and have a look. Thanks again.:)

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update on what's happening and some advice. I removed the pto cover and started the engine with the diff in neutral you can select any gear and the pto turns. However if you select Hi, Lo or locked you get nothing, pto doesn't turn. I guess that means its the transfer box :(, what do you think? Anything else to look at!! I suppose no matter what else it looks like a gearbox out job!!

Cheers for the help.

the fact shafts stops turning when load applied would lead to clutch been faulty,as long as main shaft isnt turning inside gear

Thanks for the quick response i don't know what I would do without knowledgable and helpful people on this forum:).

I couldn't see if the main shaft was turning, i presume i'll need to be under the vehical rather than in it!! I'll have to wait for the wife to get home.

the drive can be lost in a lot of ways but most common clutch and mainshaft to input gear ,so you woulkd expect mainshaft to stop if clutch or input to stop and mainshaft stiil turn if that when load applied
