Hi,

I am contemplating buying a discovery 3 as a family / tow car, and if my wife will let me, the occasional off road fun.

I have about £20-23k to spend.

So what do I look for???

General faults, signs of off road abuse, etc etc. Ive never owned a land rover before and any info would be gratefully received.

Cheers

yu is welcome to stay but as already said not a lot of D3 owners on here. lots of offroading to be done though if you want to get it muddy.

One thing they are known for is clutch burning out and destroying the dual mass flywheel. About a grand to sort it out if it goes wrong.

I don't and don't have a clue, but I know how to cut & past :D

It's not all good, so if you have 23k to spend put it down as a deposit on a brand new Disco 4.

Crash repairs. Check underneath – the finish of any repairs may not be to well finished.

Parking brake won’t release. The electronic park brake’s wiring loom will need replacing – a warranty item.

Tyre wear. Incorrect wear on the tyres indicates incorrect alignment.

Air suspension. Various problems exist from electrical issues raising and lowering the vehicle, valve blocks jamming and leaking air springs.

Tailgate struts. Gas struts work loose where they meet the body sides.

Steering. A sensor detects straight ahead – if this isn’t set centrally the vehicle may wander.

Rear wiper arms. The hinges seize – requires oiling. Also check for wiper motor operation.

Internal condition. Trim takes a battering from heavy usage. Worn seat plinths, but low mileage indicates plenty of short journeys.

Burning oil. Check oil level – some engines burn up to 1 litre per 1000miles when engine is new.

Lights. Check them for water ingress and condensation – replacements are expensive.

I had one on hire and it did 20mpg around town, it was the tdv6 hse. Everything had a small fault from what I could find. I thought it was dead nice at first but in the end I couldn't wait get my 95 V8i on the road. From what I hear the Disco 4 is better on fuel and a lot of the bugs ironed out.

Thanks for the helpful info. I will trawl the Internet for the next few months to find out more?

Ps bumped into an old rallying mate today. He mentioned some BCCC off roading what's this??
