hi, went to change front wheel bearings and when trying to undo the bottom caliper bolt it snapped so its obviously seized, does anyone have any tips on getting the rest of the bolt out.
thanks any help will be appreciated

Hi
Depends on where it snapped, if you have 4-5mm left you could try mole grips after straying it with WD-40 without getting on the brake parts!!! leave it for a while and try it.

Or you could drill the center of the bolt and use a bolt extractor.

I'm sure there will be more reply's soon

hi, the bolt broke about 2mm into the thread so there is no chance of using molegrips or welding a nut on the end of the bolt and i have had bad experiences with bolt extractors, is there no other way.
thanks jamie

If you have got the caliper off, you need to use a extractor tool.
But you said you don't like them so try this..

Find a small bolt from your stock pile, cut the head end off and find a drill bit just every so slightley bigger. Drill the center of the bolt on the vehicle and place the bolt you cutt the head off in the hole using some mole grips.

Seems you have cut the head off the bolt, the treads will be the oppersite way round, so should tighten when you turn it left and hopefully undo the bolt that is stuck.

I think in theory it should work..:scratching_chin: :scratching_chin: :confused2:

alternativly drill a hole and hammer a square file point into the hole, heat up the part around the sheard bolt to expand the metal then use an adjustable spanner/molegrips to undue the bolt. :clap2:

errrrrrrrrr
Just cos you've cut the head off a bolt, doesn't turn it into a left handed thread!

done exactly the same on my landy I eventually had to drill out the bolt and then re-tap the thread not to bad a job. Beware the bolt extracter tools if they snap off youv'e got a bigger job on your hands they are made from harder material and drill bits don't like them very much good luck!

if your going to drill it out get as close to the bolt size as possible , but do not over size drill it ! , and turn the drill speed down , keep it as slow as you can . you only want to mill it out ,start small and work up then you can use a easy out the cooler the drill bit the better the cut(my experiance)

True the amount of people i see drilling metal with high speed drills and they wonder why their bits go dull so quick:confused2: :confused2:

for gods sake dont use a bolt extracter!!!I learned the hard expensive way....be patient and drill, then a 2 mil bigger dril and so on until you can hopefully take the remaining thrad out with a pick....or retap
