Good settlement ? - I doubt it
If you see any cash back I'll be amazed - as already stated look at the guys feedback, 99p is the dearest thing he has bought !
I hope I'm wrong but I reckon you have been stitched up good and proper
Try and get ALL your money back and tell him where to stick his car - there are far better ones out there for that sort of money
BTW that car is not on the national insurance data base - do you have it insured, cos he didn't.
If he runs a business tell him you will do all that you can to make his business suffer unless you get paid back in full - hell, threaten him with anything you can think of , that's a lot of money you are lying out

And if threats don't work then beat the **** out of him

Duggie,
V8kenny has got the right idea.
You bought a RR in good faith and you've been stitched up, it seems.
Now to me, £3500 seems an awful lot of money to lose.
If the bastard wont give you your money back then do whatever it takes to get it back.
Don't take it lying down.
Were you given a receipt for the vehicle with 'sold as seen, tried and tested; no warranty written, given or implied' on it?
Lack of those words on a receipt can have quite severe legal implications for the seller in a court of law.
Good Luck !!

By agreeing to pay half towards repair I reckon that is an admission of guilt so to speak, ie, he new there were issues with the vehicle
Talk to a solicitor...........................

Then a man with a BIG axe ;)
Either way don't take this lying down

thanks for suggestions,

not sure where to start.

idea 1; have engine checked, sniff tested, look for other engine faults. then trailer to specialist to have work carried out. (head gasket was done last January according to garage ???? doesn't sound so good)

and hope that problem is sorted.

idea 2; buy a replacement engine with lower mileage and have fitted?? (btw will a 4.6 newer engine drop straight into my 1996 4.0.??)

idea 3; have a briefing at my house and all have a ride to have a *friendly chat* with the previous owner.

regards
chris

check out the items hes selling now

including a £9000 TVR

just pop round / phone him -ask him for a full refund - remind him what a shame it would be if someone accidentally poured nitromoors over that lovely TVR hes trying to sell -

that wording will only apear as part of a contractual agreement, which is NEVER included in a private sale

Chris,

Reading in between the lines, personally I think you've bought a car that has had a serious car accident and they have replaced the front grille, rad, bumpers and lights.

That would also tie in with no insurance from the previous owner as he wouldn't be able to insure a write off.

I know how much your in love with the car as we Range Rover owners all are, but lets be level headed.

Don't try and get the car back on the road at your cost....if its a write off your spending money on a car that's going to be crushed if found to be put back on the road.

Before spending any more money to an HPI check. It costs £20 and an HPI check will uncover if a used vehicle is stolen, accident damaged and any outstanding finance. Go here: HPI Check - HPI Used car history and vehicle data checks

That's the first thing to do.....let us all know what you find out.

Also tell them you want ALL the money back.

hiya chris , i think thats the engine i was going to bid on but decided not to , the guys replys to my questions were very short and a bit off hand .
got fixed up with one anyway much closer to me , paid £1250.00 for it complete with all the bits and pieces , low miles and appears to be in excellent condition ( time will tell :D ).
let us know what your engines like once you get it up and running , im curious :) .

thank you for your replies, would you give me advice on how to tell if this engine will fit and is the right one, that other engine im in process of asking, trying to make a deal with him,

you are uprating from a 4.0 to a 4.6 arn`t you chris ? then you will need the ecu and all the ancillarys .
im not sure if there is anything else you`ll need to do but im certain someone on this site will have been here and done it :) .
eightinavee is the man who will know for sure though.

You can fit the later type bosch injected engine into an earlier car,but a few things will need changing, the sump and camshaft sprocket are 2 that come to mind.It is quite commonly done, now esp as the p38 gets older and people wont spend large amounts on them.

was this engine the one on ebay in colchester ? finnished on sunday , if so its a gems engine.
easiest way to tell the difference between the early and late engine is the early ones have a large plenum chamber with iether 4.0 or 4.6 cast into them , the later one`s have a large plastic banana type inlet manifold .
