Hi guys,
My FL TD4 has got sick. Not really bad but in the last 100 miles or so it has lost some power, and when i give her some right foot (after 2,500 rpm - 4,000 rpm) or she cruises up to a hill, i get black smoke out the back. Not big clouds of it but since she has run so clean its definately noticable. My landy guy down south said it was carboned up and clearing after a good run.... i beg to differ since im now back in Lincolnshire and it is the same.
My sister used it whilst i was working away and accindentally put in Petrol (20quids worth on top of a quater tank. I spluutered and she immediately stopped and called recovery who took it to a local mechanic who flushed it out, changed the filter etc. Could his be a factor?

I also have the DTUK green chip in place and the EGR valve blank which have been fantastic. Both seem fine, the car smokes the same with or without the Chip. Im leaving her parked for now until i get an idea of how bad this can be.

Any suggestions before i take here to the financial death dealers (LR)...

Or any mechanics you can refer in the Grimsby area.

Thanks for reading and hope you can help me.

It could also be one of the inlet/intercooler hoses not seated/sealing properly if it has recently been worked on. Listen for the sound of escaping air when under load.

Hi Lee
I've got the same problem with loss of power and black smoke, but I have not put wrong fuel in. I have been told (over phone) that it is my turbo charger
Any advice
By the way, I'm just north of the Humber in Hull

lots of things to try / check before you go to the expense of a turbo charger. If you do a search on this forum, there are lots of threads on this issue. Somethings I would be looking at are:
is the EGR valve clean and unobstructed ? (better still, fit a bypass)
are all the intercooler hoses undamaged and in good condition ?
has the crankcase breather filter been changed ? If so, how long ago ?
has the solenoid boost filter been changed ? if so how long ago ?
has the air filter been changed, if so how long ago ?

and so on

good luck. I'm not being dismissive or clever with this response, but there are so many things to look at before changing the turbo, and you could save yourself a whole load of cash !

Hi guys...thought no-one was listening, but havent got email replies turned on!!1

Anyway, took to my mates garage and he suspected turbo. I had a feel around and the hose from the EGR blank unit to the top of the motor was split..... about a 3 incher!!!

New hose fitted, and drove back in with a wall of WHITE smoke behine me!

I had the cam / rocker cover breather unit replaced (good idea if no has had in changed - seriously full of crap it was!)....in doing this, the mechanic acciedentally popped one of the leak lines of one of the injectors and subsequently was spewing diesel everywhere.

He cam and sorted it in 2 mins, All is very good now...

Also, the hose on the left for the turbo system, it rubs against the stud bolt on the rocker cover so i recycled the old damaged hose and wrapped it around this area.

Thanks guys (except for the marshmallow advice!)

see my post mate..... check all ya hoses..... if when at top end u hear a fluttering sound from motor, its suckin air somewhere..... also check ya crankcase filter unit.....it could have got messy whilst sucking crap through and having bad fuel to air mix..
