Help! At my wits end with my beloved disco TD5

I think it might of been in neutral. Do they bounce out of high/low sometimes?

Maybe.... SWMBO had this happen to her the other day, after using low box in the snow, and putting it back in high.... so she thought..... she lost all drive..... it wasn't all the way in ( ooh er matron:D:rolleyes:).... hasn't done it since...

I'm not a fan of electronics either, But... it sounds very much like either your battery and/or your alternator has failed - possibly more likely your alternator if your lights were dim. I wouldn't be spending any money on anything but tools at this point in time - until you know what has actually failed...

Thank you for all your help.

We should know someone with a multimeter we can use to check alternator and battery.

I'll get my other half to look at the pictures and video's when he gets home. I'm not sure where the wires go to a the other end. I'll have a look before it goes dark.

If anyone can recommend a good mechanic in our area that would be great. We are in Poole/Bournemouth in Dorset.

Halfords will check your battery free of charge.

I know it's of no use at the moment, but in most cases a cheap digital multimeter like this for instance http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Accur...991924?hash=item2caf7130f4:g:tP4AAOSwcLxYEw1O
is all you need for general vehicle work. Nothing fancy, but accurate enough for day-to-day functions.

It really does sound like you're in a bit of a pickle and both you and those who have tried to "help" are shall we say "flummoxed".
I know you're not stuck away from home, but maybe a nice pleading PM to @The Mad Hat Man who might be able to contact somebody on the LZIR map who's close to you and knows the Disco and might be willing to assist.

@baronvonprepper is your man :)

He has a D2 Nanocom.

check the alternator first tho.

Hi Lynette, I'm between Bournemouth and Poole too so should be quite close, I have recently changed my alternator as thay packed up (I'm guessing the refurb place you are talking about is AJ windings in Wimborne)

Drop me a PM and I will see if I can sort something out to pop over and have a look at things for you, I'm on nights at the moment but should be able to pop around in the day at some point :)

Nice work,

I cannot resist..... Make sure you get the EKA code when you connect it.. Maybe very useful to @Lynnette.

Cheers

Hi everyone

Sorry I went off the radar.

We took the disco to a local Audi mechanic ( I know, I drive a land rover, but he came recommended and after the luck we've had with mechanics I felt a bit better about having as recommendation.

It turn out to be the alternator. . . This was originally replaced about 18 months ago by the 'land rover specsilist' mechanic I was using. Unfortunately he didnt replace the oil vaccuum pump on the side of it (which was leaking) so the old vacuum ccontinued to leak and killed a second alternator.

So new alternator and vacuum pump, a good charge of the battery and all fixed.

This week I've had a diesel leak from a pipe coming off the pump in the tank. Couldn't take it to Audi garage as his ramps aren't strong enough for my car. So took it to the mechanic that my work use for vans. He didn't want to pay a ridiculous price for the pipes so he fixed it for me and put some rubber on the chassis so it wont happen again

Will it ever end??????

Will it ever end? Ha no! It's a landrover!

By all means give me a shout if you ever need the beast plugged in to pinpoint something, I have nancom for the TD5 and I'm up by the range around the wallisdown area.

Always happy to help if / when, plus I do usually carry a full set of tools / tow rope :)
