Now, as a new member, and non landy owner, i am looking for a vehicle to take me to the bottom of Africa, one way. Almost everyone here in Europe has said a 110 hard top. But in South Africa, people have been telling me a Disco van TDi would be the better option??????????

Have been told a van has better security, cant see in it, and the parts are now easier to come by in Africa, and less will go wrong with it??????????

Have driven both, and prefer the 110, but as i am struggling to find one anywhere in the country, for the right price of course, and Disco vans are cheap as chips in the UK and plentiful, can anyone recommend me on the right course, pleeeeeeeeeeeeease.

I can see that raising a few eyebrows in the Congo and Angola, but it would be easier to sell once i am down there

Hi guys, thanks for the info, but i have now been advised by a company that specialise in overland expeditions and vehicles, and they have said, ex MOD 110, non turbo, because of suspension, ground clearance, usually fitted with long range fuel tanks, no electrics to go wrong and easy to fix...........

A smidgen of extra clearance goes a long way, particularly if you are on your own. The n/a diesel engines are simple, but Tdis aren;t uncommon in Africa and will be easier to live with.

If budget is a problem, you might also pick up a LHD ex-MoD which tend to be a bit cheaper.

Hi Peekay,

I live in South Africa and would agree that the 110 will be a better bet, simple engine and ground clearance is also better. There are lots of 110's in Africa and you will find a lot of guys along the road. Just do your homework well in terms of the route you're going to take and the countries you are travelling through. If you like I can send you my e-mail address and once you are in SA we can get together for a pint or two and I'll give you some advice on places worth a visit. South Africa is just about the world in one country - forests, deserts, mountains and vast prairies...

Kind regards
P

disco's and 110's have very simalr engines + sitck 235/85 r16 tyres on the ground clerance is better on a disco(better break over angle):D

Hi Ian,

Agree with you, depending on what model you buy, but I still think the 110 is a better idea. I suppose it's a matter of preference. The 110 hardtop is a good one to customise for overlanding.
