I had a standard Series III diesel A-Reg (1982) as my first Land Rover. I loved it dearly.
...right up until I tried to drive it anywhere.
The diesel engine in these beasts is woefully underpowered. Land Rover had a policy of making engines the same size - but not the same power (petrol and diesel same size that is) and they are absolutely flat as a fart in the diesel sense.
They are easy to work on and you can get to everything you need to tangle with but if you want to go uphill without walkers overtaking you I'd avoid a diesel like the plague.
...that said, I still loved it. Almost.
