hello all! I have been sifting through the landyzone forums for the past fortnight or so as i have what i believe to be the 12J 2.5 diesel engine that is found on the series 90 & 110. Its living under the bonnet of my somewhat rusty 1989 Freight Rover Sherpa 310 van. Currently i am faced with getting the van through the MOT and i am doubtful it will pass the emissions test as it produces a massive smokescreen at start up and when accelerating through the gears even when warm! Hopefully, with the help of forum members, i will be able to understand the cause and resolve this issue! Although, i must warn you that i am no mechanic, but willing to try to fix things with a modest collection of spanners and a socket set!

try sticking some redex or other desiel cleaner through it and filling it with sainsburys citi deseil worked for me started smoking again a week after the mot but did the trick
If it is a Land Rover 2.5 litre diesel in a SHERPA. it will NOT be a 12J type engine.
It will be a SPECIAL variation of the 12J, using a higher-mounted injection pump, and a quite different front cover over the timing belt.
The Sherpa variant is known as a 15J engine, and it is a little MORE powerful than the Landy 12J.
The 15J is a very good engine to fit into Landies.

Just a quick reply to each of your posts...
Sean...im too wary veg oil going into an engine that has not been properly converted. I read that the Lucas CAV IPs really dont like veg oil unless it has been pre-heated!
Defenderdavie...I already tried wynns diesel injector cleaner as recommended by a mechanic and drove 26 bmiles on it buy not seen the slightest difference!
CharlesY My engine serial number starts with 12J as stamped on top of the block at the back drivers side...so i guess a former owner put a 12J in there a while back...

rubbish, you'll be fine - especially if it's only for one fill-up, and it will almost certainly get you through the emissions test. Mix it 30-70 (50-50 is absolutely fine but if you're wary, 30-70 you probably won;t notice the difference) and it will fly through the test - then you can go back to pure diesel if you want, with a nice shiny ticket!
