I bought a Freelander a couple of years ago after owning Discoverys for 14 years and Isuzu Troopers before that. My Freelander has been the most expensive vehicle I've ever owned thanks to gearbox and IRD replacements. I'm trying to gather information about the scale of the problem for Freelander owners and will be posting in the freelander forum so take a look there and I look forward to replies to my post.

I once had the misfortune to own an Austin Allegro Estate, Renault 21 diesel & Vauxhall Astra.
All these made the most unreliable Freelander appear to be an inspired choice of vehicle.
You've bought a lemon, sell it, buy something else, get over it & move on. We've all done it at some time or other.
Gearbox (manual with all transfer gears incorporated inside) started to go on my Toyota Rav4 a couple of years ago & quotes were vague & over £1000 depending on how damaged it was & a good low mileage box was £450 but located hundreds of miles away. Sold the car at auction with no guarantee & was even honest with the auctioneer about the fault. Took a financial hit but hey ho on we go.

if you'd have mentioned the vehicles you'd owned before the freebe we'd have been a lot more understanding about your obsessive unfounded praise for said freebe

I've had Freo IRDs and gearbox failures both in and out of warranty. Just wait until all the other stuff starts to go too. They're just a crap car, sell, and get on with your life as someone else said. In the US they have "lemon" laws. Wish we had them. My sympathies.
