Hi all,

Previous freelander 2 2.2td4 SE got written off in an rta - bought an XC6O and hated it since the day it was delivered!

Looking at a discovery sport, or range rover sport - like the look of an evoque but think too small.

Have a toddler so need the space for prams and people bla bla.

What is the better option to go for in terms of engine and most reliable or least problematic. And anything to watch out for when viewing second hand vehicles? Prob up to 5 yrs old.

Loved my freelander - it prob needed a repair to the value of £1k+ annually but for everything that it provided was worth it so looking for an upgrade!

Any and all advice much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Yes I am female, not handy with a spanner and def not a snob!

I used to be a member on her many years ago .... and thought this be the best place for honest advice!

Hi and welcome to the asylum , lol

firstly I’m very sorry to hear ur landy was written off and good that u came out of it ok

what kind of budget are u looking at plse as indeed that will also determine what model, year etc , alas don’t know where abouts are , ref the London ULEZ etc / petrol - diesel

if ur looking at bigger models ur need much deeper pockets , ie, RRS has air suspension along with a dynamic anti roll bar system which can be very expensive to repair , particularly if u have to rely on garages

Simple things like getting yourself a diagnostic reader will at least save u some money , many garages will charge £100- 200 just to plug one in , both the DS and RRS have a lot of electronics so having one is extremely beneficial

same with D3- D4 in requiring deep pockets if it will be maintained by a garage

not trying to put u off but being honest with u , plus getting a comprehensive warranty is always good to have , just need to read the small print of what’s not covered

at the end of the day best to put a post over in each section as then others will be able to advise u further

discovery section

range rover section

hope the above has been helpful in a small way

Hello and thank you!

Looking at spending as least as possible close to the £30k mark.

I did wonder if the RR would have more costly implications than the DS?

All your info is very much appreciated.

To be honest, I'd not spend anything like £30k on a modern LR or RR. They are just too unreliable, and expensive to repair if you use a garage, and in the next few years they'll be hit with massive tax rises.

If I had £30k for a vehicle now, I'd definitely be going electric.

Thanks and yes I am thinking all of that too!

Reluctant to go electric at the moment for a variety of reasons- but would consider hybrid for sure. Thanks

How about an Evoque. I've heard of good authority they are the in thing.
