Not very rare, they were purchased by the MOD in tens of thousands, and demobbed and sold later.

Historic Vehicles are Zero rated for VED, and MOT exempt.
Also, unless you are planning to do vast mileages, you should be able to get Classic insurance, which at your location should only cost a bit over a hundred quid a year for a Series.

A Defender, on the other hand, would cost over 300 quid for VED, plus at least 300 a year to insure, and it would need an MOT every year.
