I thought that this might be an appropriate post...

....Just done a few jobs on S3 that have made me want to put the B*st*rd on ebay.

So I thought that it might be a nice idea to start a thread to share those job you really, really wish you hann't started....
...And novel solutions to then.

So here we go:
Rear window seal replacement.
Brought "yeah that'll be enough mate" window seal from Craddocks.
Pulled out old seal no problem
Resparyed rear tub, and roof, started to fit window seals one handed (other holding glass) trying too keep rubber straight. IMPOSSIBLE WTF dosn't that stuff stay in one position. OK back window corners WILL NOT GO IT take out rubber try again. this time with washing up liquid. NOPE still not going in. Put glass on floor shout at it a little (rubber falls out). Go for a tea and a smoke. Try agian bingo no problem. So its asymmetic then.

Confidence good try top curved pain in no problem - feeling good.

Big window - FORTHELOVEOFGODALMIGHTYANDTHEHOLYVIRGINMARY Not enough rubber. Back to Craddocks then.

Starts raining. rubber in line up window. Rubber falls out of top of window. Repeat process. rubber falls out on top. go for smoke. repeat 5 times. Now SILICON seal rubber in top of window. rubber stay put. washing liquid on rubber pick up glass. DROP GLASS. Go to scrappie pick up glass, clean glass put glass in bottom and USE WASHING UP LIQUID ONLY ON BLUNT SCREW DRIVER.

LOCKING BEAD TIME....

...START - 2 hours latter - start taking photos for ebay....

Are these the fixed windows? A tip I learned from having a Reliant Robin is to run a cord inside the groove in the rubber. As you push the glass in you pull the cord to bend the rubber over the glass (it's easier to do than explain). Worth a try?

Agree with the above, try searching on youtube for a video on installing vehicle glass.

Got the joy to come with mine soon..

had this on a works dihatsu fourtrak after window put thru.
3 others tried and gave up before i managed it.
draw wire / cord does work when you work out how to do it

I use to use the nozzle from from a silicone tube with the draw cord, as that gives you some thing to wiggle, and work the rubber round, that was a tip i got from a plant glazier years ago, might be worth a try
:)

I've always found "Para cord" the best for this... small diameter and very strong...

just wrap around the recess on the rubber and cross over at the bottom... pull one end through the window aperture, starting at the bottom on in the panel and it just pulls the rubber straight through as you work your way round.

Best to have somebody else hold the new window from the other side and spray the rubber with warm water with some washing up liquid in to lubricate it

In my limited experience any "little job" that you think youve got time to get done in the spare hour youve got before you go out is guarenteed to end in oily disaster. Wouldnt have it any other way though:)

Windows are a bar steward on just about any vehicle, thats why body shops mask em instead of taking them out, if you changed them all on your own and they are in proper you did really well.

Got another one!!!!!

Rear main crank seal replacement with engine in car

WTF is with that spring - OHHHHH I HAAATEEEEE IT

recomendations - do it summer cold hands trying to get it the eye is soooo difficult.

Anyone got any better ideas?

did you not use the applicator?

3BRG Crank seals are different. There is no applicator.

It involves removing the sump, Main Bearing cap ect ect.... Hours of fun!

I was lucky when i done mine, Engine was on a bench :)

Dunno if you will be able to view it, but this guide shows how much of a pain in the arse is! Land Rover UK Forums

Thats fantasticly put.. I laughed to myself... I just fixed holes in exhaust backbox in the dark with some sheets of metal some jubilee (terry) clips and some fire cement... lying on the wet ground with bits going in my eye... but yes, worth every minute... haha! also got time to stop that annoying speedo glass from rattling as I drive.. and a regular oil top up... and a bit of windscreen sealant.. again. ...
