Height Sensor Readings and Calibration

Check the part number on the EAS ECU, I have an early one from a 96 and a late 2000 one, I was not aware that they might be different but it's possible. Let me know the number and I'll compare with mine.:)

I was talking bo11ox with this. Checked mine earlier (98 model) and it has the sensors with the multi plug that you plug the lead into. Although the front ones do have another multipoint connector further up, behind the inner wheel arch, which I remember cleaning up when I fitted the new sensors.
 
Typical, no numbers on my ECU. Here's a pic though if it helps.

Those are the same ones I have Kev, although I'm not sure I should!! I wonder though if it had previously been on springs, and some sensible person put it back to air, albeit with the earlier setup!

Has anyone tried a later sensor on an earlier model? Would that give funny readings? (Can't think why anyone would at the cost of them!!!!)

Oh, and no obvious way of seeing which pin number is which, and can't see the colour. Back to rave before the continuity check.

Thats what the inside looks like, note all the crap on the tracks and note also there are 2 tracks. I'm pretty sure the centre pin on the one with the integral connector is the common and the two outers the tracks, may be different on the one with the flying lead. If push comes to shove I can try to remove a rusted one from the 96 wreck and check.

OK, I'll take the old one apart now.

Interestingly, Island only list one ECU and I had a quick look on the bay at them (more for pics than anything else, I wouldn't buy these secondhand), but, there was one listing which was for a sensor with a wire, for fitting 94-02. First thoughts were someone doesn't know what they're selling, but on looking, the listing is from Emmots!!

Emmots are not always right, I've just corrected their ad for a ZF4HP24 for a 4.0, they were only fitted to the 4.6.
 
Fair play, one less confusion :)

Pics of the inside of the flylead sensor attached. Might just be me, but that looks like the track goes all the way round, so would it have been swappable?

Either way, knackered, and defo not one of the newer ones.

So would that explain the low readings, and is it worth me getting a FL one with a flylead?

Marc. Just had a look in my box of bits and found a front sensor. Its from a salvage lot I bought a couple of years ago, so I dont know if it works (looks ok). It is however the same type as the new one you bought (i.e. with the built in connector, no fly lead). You are more than welcome to it if you want to try 2 sensors the same at the front.
If you want it just pm me your address and I'll pop it in the post tomorrow.

Looks like 2 tracks concentric but deffo different, maybe the early and late ECU's are different.

It definitely looks like I've got the wrong setup on mine, lets hope my earlier guess at a swap to coils and back again is right :)

Keith, Kev is going to send me up another later, non-flylead version so I can try with bot the same. If both give low readings, then it's a new flylead version on the way :D

I am just about to fit a Front Left sensor to my 1995 4.6.
The kit supplied to me from Island 4x4 indicates two different kits are available,
STC3579AA for front right
STC3578AA for front left
Both have a bracket, sensor, fixings & a wiring loom.
This loom is DIFFERENT for each side.
Green for right & red for left.
Could it be that you have the wrong loom for the side you are changing.

There are only 3 wires to the sensor, as long as they connect to the right pins no problem. As the senors appear the same inside for both sides, hard to see why the loom should be different unless for some obscure reason the pinouts are different on left and right old sensors.
 
When you say loom, do you mean the internal wire colours or the outer sheath? If outer sheath, I'd suggest that's just an identification. But, bear in mind my issue is that on my car I shouldn't have looms coming off either side, the main loom (i.e from the ECU to the sensor) should plug directly into the sensor. The earlier ones had the flylead (see rest of thread).

Also, I would imagine that if the pinouts were different on left/right on the flylead type, then they would need a different ECU configuration to the later interchangeable types else you'd end up with the wrong configuration going into the ECU from one of the sensors. Island only list one ECU, with no year details, so assuming there is only one for all years, it would suggest that the pinouts should be the same.

Although feel free to argue with my logic, as it's only logical guesswork on my part :D

Out of interest, do all the earlier cars have sensors on brackets fitted on the front? Although mine have the flylead, they are mounted directly onto the chassis.
 
My kit looked like the attached photo for Front Left Sensor for 1995 4.6

i) sensor
ii) bracket
iii) harness with red tape
iv) heatshield
v) fixings
vi) instruction sheet

Notice the harness has red tape around it, the RH side has green tape.

The sensor I took off my car had a flying lead & no bracket.
I do not know if it is an original or not.
The RH sensor is mounted on a bracket.
Do not know which was original & which has been replaced before I got the car.

The bracket is for the left hand (passenger) side to support the heatshield (shield from exhaust). No heatshield on drivers side.
Marc, your sensor is on its way; hopefully will be with you tomorrow.
