Heavy vibration.

Its taken me a while to get back to you and my thread has been hijacked it would seem. Anyhow, I don't have a problem on my prop shafts apparently. It is vibrating violently now and it has been put to me that Discoverys have been known to throw a handbrake shoe and that this could be the problem in my case. This may also be why I could here this noise that sounded like a piece of metal going round in a washing machine.

Funny enough I thought it sounded like a brake binding when I first heard it so think that diagnosis may be a strong possibility.

I would be interested to here of anyone that may have had similar problems.

It dawned on me that back in the eighties I bought a landrover 110 and it had a problem with juddering when I dipped the clutch pedal and that turned out to be a sticking handbrake.

Anyway the handbrake drum is going to be dismantled tomorrow so will let you all know the outcome.
 
I thought the brake shoes were fixed and the drum spun round. If it threw a shoe all that would happen is your handbrake wouldnt work. But what do I know I'm just a focus owner......
 
Well Rev James it looks like your right, this is not a handbrake problem. My mechanic has removed the front propshaft and the vibration has gone. However, he can't get the car to move without selecting diff lock.

First of all can anyone now tell me more definately what may be wrong with it and why the car won't move without diff lock being on. It seems it is definitely something to do with the front drive, but what?

Can anyone help please. I am about to pull the plug on this and just use the car for spares for my other 300Tdi.
 
with diff lock out, yer drive takes the easiest route....will just spin the end wiff no shaft....engaged it transfers equal drive in both directions
 
hmmm....come to think of it, check everybloodything.....cud b something stoopid like a cracked engine/gbox mounting too

Well, I reckon it was the trip to Brighton that cost £200 in diesel that was the last straw. Don't get me wrong I loved the disco but when its the only car in the family its a bit steep to run. The Focus C MAX 1.6Tdci will do up to 69 mpg and 50 just around town! On my annual 9000 miles that means a saving of about £60/Month. May get a series one day for a hobby.

I am listening, but my mate seems unable to find anything wrong with the UJs and shafts other than when the front shaft is off the vibration goes.

First of all, what is this bearing that has been mentioned where the shaft enters the transfer box. Is it easy to access and would it break up enough to cause the noises I have been hearing?

Secondly, can the car operate ok in 2 wheel drive if the front shaft is completely removed and with the diff lock engaged?
 
WTF's wrong wif triadur bay??? i have......well had a 17ft 100bhp outboard and 2 14's up there, nice and choppy when yer get out the bay.!
 
I had a dell quay eurosport 15 with evinrude 70 it was a bit awkward launching and recovering on your own. Fuel economy? 3mpg! but great fun. Going to get a smaller boat for fishing.
 
You say you have 2 300tdi discos? What I'd do is take the prop off the good motor and stick it on the bad one and see if the problem is the same. Make sure you mark where the flanges align though so you can put it back on exactly the same as it came off.

69mpg!!! 69mpg. I'm sorry but that's impossible. I have a Focus Tdci 1.6 and it only gives me 32mpg so your calculations must be wrong...........................................................................................

Thanks Woot. It had gone through my mind that I should do what you suggest, but I am very reluctant to take anything off my good one. I think I have resigned myself to taking my faulty one off the road. It has covered 161000 miles and it is very rusty in places, this being because I live right on the coast. The engine is very good, but I feel I don't want to get into throwing good money after bad on the rest of it. It has a wealth of spares on it that I can use on my good car so I don't feel that its a total loss.

I bought my good car only recently and it is a cracker. It is older than my original, but it is in fantastic condition and only has 96k on the clock and it only cost me £2000.
