I have a series 1 discovery, 200 tdi, 1991 h reg, manual. i`m enquiring whether the heating system ever was any good in the discovery when they first came out or where they still abit agricultural like in the series 2a or 3? i`m not expecting a 15 year old motor to be roasting hot, just not a bit artic inside the vehicle!

The vehicle has air-con fitted, which to its benefit does work whether the heating is set on cold or warm (the internal temperature guide for being warm or cold in side the vehicle). if the air con function is set the motor will force the air through the system at the pre-determined strength you want i.e 1,2 or 3. so the motor works fine. there are four pre selects on the heating mechanism. there is the air condition function as described above which works, when selecting the other three functions (there are a red or white star and and white/blue lines with arrows) no air comes through at all, even though it had previously done so with the air con function selected. therefore i can have the system off or freeze to death with the air con on or with the windows open?

any ideas?

the windscreen demistes at a very slow rate, as only warm air trickles through once the engine has warmed up.

i dont have AC on mine and the heater is just fine.

are you loosing any water? whats the temp gauge showing?
if the car is too cold in winter then try blocking off part of the rad with tinfoil or summat.
maybe the stat is sticking open?
i remove the fan in winter. you might want to remove the fan and install an electric one?

I have changed the stat to the 300tdi one in mine, meaning the engin runs a little warmer and he heating is better.

If I remember correctly it should be 83 deg in the 200tdi and the 300tdi is 88deg

I have 200tdi with aircon it's a '93 model but registered in '94 so it hasn't had the '94 facelift. When we bought it 11 years ago the heating system was a nightmare to understand, but when you finally get the hang of it, it's really good. The aircon is excellent in summer. I've had two small problems with mine. The fan speed was always on full, this was due to a faulty resistor, to be found on the bulkhead. (under the bonnet) and the other which is quite dangerous. There is a vacuum pipe which operates one of the heater flaps, comes up from somewhere behind the engine and goes to a T-piece which feeds the brake servo from the vacuum pump. Over time this pipe had become brittle on the T-piece and fractured resulting in loss of power to the brakes, very scary. Apparently, it's quite common and the bodge fix is to block the hole up to get your brakes back. But then your heater doesn't work as it should. So the proper fix is to put the pipe back where it belongs. Having said all that, the heater works very well with loads of hot air to the screen when needed. I have never been cold in my discovery in winter when the engine is fully warm. And exactly the opposite in summer. The only thing I can advise is to run the aircon through the side vents and point them at the side windows, this keeps the condensation down and stops you steaming up.

Hope this helps.

Check the operation of yout thermo, need to do the one in my 300tdi over the hols, as the heater is gubbed as the thermo opens and stays open pretty much

What else have I to do... oh clean the intercooler, manifold, change oil & anti freeze... ah the list.
