Had a bit on an issue this morning on the way to work, thermostat is normally at 60-65 degrees when warm, today it went to 90 degrees. top hose hot but a lot of pressure in it and very hard to squeeze. Bottom hose hot , radiator stone cold, no leaks or anything. It already has new radiator, new water pump, new thermostat and new hoses. Drove it home tonight and it got to 60 degrees as normal.

On a plus side the heater was great on the way to work.

Any ideas?

Sounds like your coolant froze up, you need to change your anti freeze, use a good longlife OAT pink anti freeze in a 50 50 mix. Also best to use distilled water to mix it with.
COMMA OR Halfords OAT longlife anti freeze. are good and last 5 years.
Not having effective anti freeze in could crack your engine block or pop core plugs.

Has new antifreeze in it, I will test it but was only changed last year when rebuilt engine fitted. Could be too much water not enough freeze. Thank you

Pink stuff is no good for tdis, need the blue, non-OAT stuff for them.

I'd still change your antifreeze with a fresh 50/50 mix of correct fluid for your engine. You cant mix pink with blue though, it will have to be flushed out if you can use it.

I think you will find Oats which is the red gear didnt come out on land rovers until the TD5 came out in 1998.
I run the old blue gear in both my 200tdis.

People always like to upgrade stuff but in relaity the 200/300tdi are just fine on the old blue stuff and mineral engine oils.

As for the ops original question, I think you have a stat problem assuming you have a 200/300 they should run at 85/90 pretty much all the time, 60 is way to low.
If its a 200 getting a decent stat is now a bit of an issue, the cheap ones are utter kin carp.

I have tried so many stats over the past 3 years it is unbelievable, the one fitted I tested before fitting so it was working.........

Going to drain and refill it tomorrow with clean fresh antifreeze.
