Hi all

Has anybody modified their heaters in any way to make them more efficent?

Its that time of the year and i fancy upgrading my heater somehow, just wondered if anybody has had a go?

Cheers

Jim

Hi, I have't done it, but was also thinking about it myself. I have seen a kit on e-bay which is supposed to improve them. I think it increases the force that the air blows out. Would be interested what anyone could suggest though.

After all this bloody freezing weather we have been having, I too have been thinking about upgrading the heating.

I know there is a unit that you can get. I am looking for something that wont cost an arm and a leg, anyone point me in the right direction?

Regard

Rich

If its that silly modified vent that sticks on the top of the wing I wouldnt bother.

I have fitted one and to be honest, its made very little if any difference

Apparently an XR2 heater core fits and is bigger / more efficient than the LR one. I haven't done it myself and can't remember exactly where the source was either!... but the donation of a fatter heat exchanger would seem a better answer than trying to stuff more air through something that is too easily cooled already..

Have seen this system mentioned, don't remember where;

Have no idea of price and how effective they are, although probably overkill in the month or so of really cold weather we can expect each year.

My heater used to be great until it suddenly dropped power on the 'high' setting, so I think there may be something that needs a fiddle.

Oh the e-bay thing was just an heater fan improvement kit, a new resistor that allows increased speed. No effect on the heat.

Jim,

Have you actually taken your heater to bits yet ? Worth doing, all you need is a spanner to remove the box, and a drill to remove all the pop rivets.

Have a look at your heater when undone this all, check to see if there are any signs of leaks, leaf debris, and see how perished the rubber/foam jacket is - When I replaced - well overhauled the jacket, with some chopped up camping mat, and put it back together - found that its much more efficient - okay the fan speed is pretty naff still, but at least you can't feel the cold air coming out of the vents anymore when its on hot - in fact it gets so hot now in my 90 van-style LandRover that often have to open the window to let the heat out.

Allow about 2 hours to overhaul heater.

Check cabling, as well, as this can be lubricated in situ with the correct tool found here:

Hope this helps you.
BTW I wish I'd bought a LR replacement Jacket, as these fit !

Thanks Peter

I have had a look before, but it looked ok to me. I just think that Defender heaters are pretty naf.

Nice to see you are another kent chap though!

Maybe I'll rip it to bits and make my own set up.

Cheers

I must have a one off land rover 110 heater in mine because it is great, instant heat, and very good speed, and if on full speed you need the windows open or its too hot lol.

It may have something to do with all the heat from the V8 lol. :D

Scott.

Heat output is good on my 300tdi 110 problem is the time to get up to temp and the amount of space to heat.

There's a 12V ebersacher heater advertized in Januaries Canal boat monthly magazine about £300. Can't remember exactly, I'm at work, magazines at home. Will post exact details later if I remember.
