Hi, I am having problems with the heater on my 2001 Freelander 1.8 S. The air is just warm when the engine is running and the car is stationary and almost cold when the car is moving (even when the controls are turned to full and after the engine has been running for some time). I know that these heaters are run off air passed over a matrix fuelled by heated coolant. The coolant level is fine and no signs of leaks and there is no indiction of damp around the passenger side floor suggesting a leaking matrix. Could anyone suggest what may be causing this? Any thoughts appreciated.

What does the temprature gauge read?? Does it fluctuate at all? Being a 1.8 I would be worried about anything to do with the cooling system.

Have you tried bleeding the matrix? Bleed screw on the hose coming out the bulkhead in the engine compartment is for the matrix.

Hi
Thank you for your prompt response
Temperature guage seems to register just below mid-range when car has been running for a while and is stationary. When the car is travelling the guage generally stays low (no more than quarter of the way up the guage). Is this unusual? I don't tend to travel long distances and I only got the car in the Autumn so have not driven it in any heat.
I am aware of the cooling issues with these engines (though sadly only heard after I bought it), but the car shows none of the dreaded HG warning signs (i.e. it is not losing coolant and there's no white residue in the oil filler cap). Is there anything else I should watch out for?
What do I need to do to try bleeding the matrix? do I loosen the screw whilst the engine is running?
Many thanks

make sure heater valve on hot and then loosen bleed screw, try with stopped engine first, then try with engine running, in the heater unit in the cabin there is also the heat regulator valve to check along with its cable connection

it should raise to halfway (ish) and stay there. if your temp is dropping when moving i'd guess your stat it staying open alittle, forcing coolent throught the radiator.

get that sucker out and changed. tis only a few quid
