Hi, just signed up.
I've just picked up a '97 Discovery Tdi and driven it from Wolverhampton to Exeter with the heater on full but no real heat is coming out!!!
Is this a thermostat problem or heater matrix?
Also how do you change the headlights? Ive just got some brighter bulbs but can't fit them.
Any help would be great
Ben

have you checked the coolant level?? lights are easy. Pop bonnet and remove wiring plug from back of light fitting the remove black rubber cover Bulb is held in by a spring clip. If you can't get ya hand in to do that the whole headlamp unit is held in by 3 clips that pull back slightly and twist to line up with slot cut in housing.

Checked coolant level again this morning and is fine. Ran for an hour to work and no heat at all.
Any more suggestions ?
Many thanks

get the head gasket checked its one of the first signs that is on its way out also check there is a thermostat fitted

Just be aware that the Discos tend to be `over cooled' - my TD5 is anyway. Takes an age to get to optimal operating temperature and until it does the heat coming into the cab is minimal. Yesterday in a run from Nottingham to Knutsford the heater didnt really start working until well past Derby. I guess they are designed to be used all day. Most people switch to a Kenlow electronic fan when they have the chance. I'll be doing that myself in the summer (no way I'm working on her in theis weather unless absolutely necessary!). I hope this helps and Happy Disco ownership!

One thing I've noticed in this cold weather is the amount of Disco's with Cardboard in front of the radiator. The chap that fixes my car warned me that that the fan in it just draws too much cold air in and leaves you with cold blows. Oh and how I found out driving home the other week, she had warm blowers half the way home from work, but it started getting really cold and just knocked the heaters off. Oh the joys of winter

Interesting that no matter what the Disco type this cold snap has started loads of threads on the heater not working, My td5 takes the normal 15 mins to get the temp gauge moving and when running hot sits at the half way stage which I think is the norm for most, my issue is when i stop in standing traffic the heater blows cold, as soon as its moving again it blows hot.

been told to check coolant levels, air lock (by way of thumb screw bleed), and check to see if the fan turns easily when cold and then lastly thermostat which on the td5 is a bugga to change due to its location.

Just sharing me points

Hi Ben

I had the same trouble , I found that the coolant was up to the mark but with the engine going it dissapeared.
I filled up to the mark with the engine running and the heater works fine now

Give it a try.

Regards Jerry.

+1 found out about the heater issue myself this week.. turns out its normal and just the way it is...

There have been lots of posts about poor heating in Disco 1's.
In almost all cases changing the thermostat cures the problem.
Cheap to buy and easy to fit. Did mine 2 years ago after car seemed to take ages to heat up.After new thermostat becomes positively tropic very quickly.Warm air within a mile from cold.Always start with the easiest fix.Remember to bleed properly.

Hi i have a 300tdi disco and have the same problem after sitting in traffic i pull away and get a very bad gurgling noise from under the dash once this has stopped i get hot air from the heater i have followed jst about every possible way to bleed the cooling system!!!! i.e

parking on a hill

filling heater matrix the connecting the hoses

flushing the hole system then refilling very slowly

holding the header tank higher than the thermostat and filling

i am now lost and its making me very stressed and fustrated!!!!

PLEASE IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEARS PLEASE LET ME KNOW

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

I have a 300tdi in north Ontario. I Solved my heater troubles with a 12volt curculating pump ( from a GMC mini van) in one of the heater hoses.I do'nt need to run the pump all the time.
