Hi All,

Spent a couple of hours looking for my headlight problem on here but cannot nail a solution as of yet! Annoyingly, one that was very close to mine, just faded off into the ether with no solution identified!

Anyway;

My car:
  • Defender 110 300 TDI M Reg
My headlight problem:
  • On the main headlight switch - front side lights work on both positions on switch, dipped beam doesn't work on second position on switch, full beam works on second position on switch.
  • On the steering column indicator/horn switch - full beam works when you pull it.
So my question is why does the dipped beam not work?

I've wiggled the wires about, cleaned the contacts and replaced the switch with a nice Lucas one but the problem is still the same!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Mo

Have you checked the dim dip relay which is located behind the binnacle (part of the dash with the gauges in) ?
or even taken it out, thrown it and by-passed the wiring ?

Have you checked the fuses? It's surprisingly easy to miss something like that.
The main light switch is fine, since the main beams work. Therefore if it's not the fuses, it could be a poor connection on the dip/main beam stalk.

Thanks Dippypud! I will check the relay and see if that is the problem! Also thanks for the PDF! Very useful and clearer than the Haynes version!
Thanks FlyingPete! Yes, checked the fuses and cleaned the connections!

I like the PDF cos you can print a page off and go and sit in the car ticking off the wires and pluggy bits :D

Hello again!

Well, this morning when I went to work I had no lights at all!

Tried doing the usual; fuse check, wiggling the wires, taking the switch connectors apart and putting them back together again but to no avail.

I've not even had a chance to look at the relay yet!

I'd be grateful for any suggestions!

Cheers,

Mo

Check the wiring at the back of the ignition switch, the plate can work lose ...

The other thing is the switch itself. On some of them the plastic can distort if it gets warm and the contacts don't quite meet each other. A friend of mine had this problem where the lights would come on only at certain positions of the switch but not others, and then nothing at all, except main beam flash. A bit of judicious testing with a meter and a hairclip (to bridge selected terminals) revealed it was the switch not making contact. A new switch sorted it.

Well, you were right FlyingPete it was the fuses or to be more specific, the fuses under the bonnet! 2 of them had gone, were replaced and hey presto!

Haven't got a clue why they went although I noticed my fog light was full of water and pretty corroded up and I did use it the other day before I noticed the headlights weren't working although if the main fuse had gone I would have though they all would have stopped working!

Anyway, will remember that one if it comes up again!

Cheer all!

Mo
