Hi, got a problem with my headlights. Side lights come on as should but thats all ive got. Not bulbs as checked them and as far as i can tell the wires are in position. Full beams come on if i flash my lights. any ideas as to what the problem could be. also alternator has started to produce backflow so flattens battery when engine off. any chance these 2 are related?? Not sure if they started at the same time but noticed them within a day or 2 of each other. cheers

Have you checked the fuses? if so check you have an earth conection at the lights. Also check the earth from the battery to the body and that the alternator is also earthing properly. Use a meter on homs setting to check continuety.
Good luck!

There is a inherent fault with the light switch of about that era, pull it out and check the connection on the switch, there is a copper type plate that sometimes cracks causing a loss of current. the switch is quite a simple mechanism and the inner workings can be seen without pulling it apart. If it is a cracked plate as above, it can be soldered. :)

 Are my posts invisable over there or can't you Poms read Australian,
I'm tellen ya it's the Fooking Light Switch on the steering column, replace it or solder up the flat bit of metal on the back.

dim dip unit can go tits up-mine has been altered by someone and this evening I can't turn the side lights off

early dim dip is a black lucas unit behind dash (black) I believe there is a resistor pack on wing-bulk head area -yet to look at my ****box

got lights sorted. still got a problem with the alternator flattening the battery. check wires heading into back of alternator and they in firmly and ther is no corrosion on the terminals. where do these wires then run to??

nt sure. no visible crack in the plate mentioned by ssmn1234, but had a new switch unit so swapped em over and they started working  just the alternator issue to sort now :(

side lights mine after a brief look because it's ****ing down isn't the switches or dim dip relay -removed all light fuses and the bastard is still lit.

but is in fact the rear wiring loom has shorted across from permanent live feed to both side lights and there is a break in fog feed, so I'll be fixing that when i can be bothered
