Hello there - got a small problem on my Disco - the side lights come on, headlights don't come on at all but when you pull the flasher, the main beams come on. Checked both the dipped beam fuses, they are fine. All the fuses are fine in fact. Is there a relay for the headlamps? According to the diagram, the circuits only use the two dipped beam fuses.
Could the switch on the stalk have gone and come this be tested easily or should I be looking elsewhere?
Someone had done some dodgy wiring which I'll checkout tonight - haven't checked the bulbs but doubt they both blew and the main beams still work from the flasher. Main beams aren't working without the dipped on, even when the switch is in the correct position.

2 blown bulbs, knackered switch, dodgy earths would be my first items to check. Take one of the bulbs out and check it hasn't blown. If thats fine then check the voltage coming out of the connector that goes onto the bulb. Be suer to use a decent earth when you do this as it will help narrow down if it is an earth or switch fault. No voltage would say indicate knackered switch. It is unlikely to be a broken live as they are on seperate circuits.

the switch contacts on the stalk can get ****ted up with dust and fluff, probably worth taking it out and giving the contacts and surrounding area a good clean with some WD40 an a rag.

What about the silly little black wire on the back of the stalk??? A tiny little wire, nothing special, but mine had broken off, giving the self same symptoms you describe, i trapped mine back in between the stalk moulding where it had broken off! If it is the problem, u will see where it has to go and what i mean by my dodgy early morning description!! ;)

You have a broken wire in the stalk, mine did that whilst driving home at night, side lights work, main beam and flash works.
you just need to take the steering wheel off and re solder the connector, cost me a tenner for a new (second hand) one as i did not know the problem at the time.

Why the fark would you want to take the steering wheel off??

Guys right on the money. Silly little black wire had come unsoldered:

Undo about 10 screws and pull the bottom panel off, there the culprit was. Should be a nice fix once I get the soldering iron out!

Cheers guys.
