As I'm now going insane due to lots of pressure in my cooling system (see previous post), any advice would be greatfully received.

I'm going to remove the head on my 1998 300TDi to change the head gasket.
What sort of price should I pay for a skim and pressure test on the head?

Do I have to strip everything off the head (valves etc)?

I can get a recon head for £275 exchange, is this a good price?

I can get a second hand head (pressure tested and skimmed) for £150, is this a good price?

I'm going to use new head bolts. Whats the best head gasket to buy?

Thanks in advance
Paul.

I was quoted £35.00 for my heads skimming from a local place, I looked on ebay for the gaskets themselves and they were about £30.00 each, I would do the work my-self to help keep any costs down.

My gasketts are leaking but at the moment im just having to keep my expansion tank topped up with antifreeze, until I get some seruos problems Im going to leave it.

Thanks for the replies. It seems the prices are pretty similar.
I've read something about multi layered gaskets, are these what some people call laminated? anybody used them? are they expensive?
Thanks.

Good prices for recon head (presume built up) and second hand one as well

If its obvious where the gasket has failed, but the head is still flat there is no need to skim or pressure test it.Get it all clean, have the valves out and lap if needed, new stem seals and reassemble.I would avoid the multilayer type gasket that LR now supply,I've had problems with oil leaks around the front of the head with them.Payen or Elring gaskets are fine.
