Head Gasket?

So, I just recently replaced the instrument surround, and the fuel gauge. I must have done something wrong as the temperature gauge no longer works and the fuel gauge still does not.

Anyways, the same day the I did the job and the gauge stopped working, my truck started driving pretty rough and I could smell a little bit of coolant. Looked up underneath, and there certainly was a leak. Not a major leak, but still there. Then a few days ago it started spitting white smoke from the exhaust.

I searched around the engine to make sure, and found a couple of other issues. Overflow resevoir was stopped up, and a hose had a major hole in it. Fixed that, but obviously the truck will still have white exhaust.

So, without a doubt it's a bad head gasket, and the locals will charge a minimum of approximately $1200, parts supplied. Well, that's a bit much, and I don't really trust the locals. I know, sounds rude, but you'd have to live here to understand.

Now, I do have the Land Rover 110 WSM, but there's nothing straight forward about a head gasket change.

Could I do a job like this? How do I go about it? And, what tools do I need to complete it?

LR Series has the genuine gasket at about $35. I've already learned my lesson about Britpart.

Cheers in advance!

Temp guage...probably loose connection at the sensor or a failed sensor.

Fuel guage..probably the sender unit in the tank.

It's rare for that engine to suffer HGF, although mine went. Was the reservoir empty? Did you run it dry? Is the white smoke there all the time?

Thats crazy money...even for spain...to be honest you can get a good used 2.5n/a for 100 pounds...but you'd be better off getting a 200tdi from a disco for 200-300...even a defender one (800-1000) and putting that in. Works out cheaper, you'll get better economy and more power.

Whats a 110 WSM? Do you mean CSW?

It most certainly could have gone dry in the day I started to have issues. The overflow was full, but upon searching around the overflow hose had a nice sized hole in it. Replaced the hose, and cleaned out the overflow. But those issues certainly could have been the cause of the hgf.

I was thinking the same for head gasket replacement, but I did also just look at local yards for a 200tdi. One wanted 1000 euros for one, and that's pretty much all I've found thus far.

Edit; WSM - Workshop Manual

If it went dry then yes, you've probably fecked the head gasket and will need to get the head skimmed too..its not that expensive though. I'm sure you can do it if you have the time and basic tools...but if you dont then i wouldn't pay that money on a N/A engine...find out if that 200tdi was a defender, if it was it drops straight in. Haggle the price...you'll save it on fuel within a year...but i agree its a fair sum to pay out in one go.

Thanks again for advice, Storm! I'll give some calls today to local yards.

If I do end up doing the gasket replacement, what do I need? Is it fairly straightforward? Other than turning the bolts that is. I understand they need to be done in increments.

You need to get the torque settings correct and do them in sequence...it'll be in your manual. You probably ought to replace the head bolts too...and of course you'll need a gasket and new coolant :D:D
