Head Bolt

How badly striped is it? I mean is it just a little pin stripe or is it the full tartan crosshatching? You could drill it and heli-coil it but I reckon the easiest way would be to paint it so it's a plain bolt and you'll no longer need to get a striped one out.

Thanks tempting to use a gall, but no the star drive have almost gone it looks like its been over tightend when it had its last gaskit done I am tring to fit a new head gaskit but its now looking like a new engine.

or even grind a square on it if you can get in with the grinder. Then use a spanner

ele give him a chance he may not be used to getting his hand mucky.
 
IF yer can get a pair of stilsons on it, thats probelly yer best bet as head bolts tend to be tight which will A/ snap yer stud extractor thing, B/ require so much heat yer likely to fook yer already delikate head C/ be so tight that the hammer and punch approach will just fook, it even more


if yer can weld a nut on to it without putting too much localised heat into it that might also work

Some good pointers.

The head bolts are slightly recessed into the alum,

if the OP'er hasn't already done so the cam carrier should be removed.

The head can come off with the cams and cam carrier intact, the cam lobes obstruct the heads of the bolts, each cam has to be rotated to access some of the head bolts. With the cam carrier removed it clears up some space.

I would try and square off two sides, only thing is, you dont want any metal filings going into the bowels of your engine
 
Thanks for all the ideas may try a weld but i only have an ark welder would that do it as i dont want to meld the aloy on the head!
Trying to find an engin at sencible money then get rid of it an by a disco tdi

Now that is a seriously sensible idea ;)

Is it not a ****abolity to drill the head off the bolt, remove the head over the 'stud' thats left and then get some stilsons on the stud (as slob suggested) once the head is off then?
 
Drill the head off it is the way to go, vice grips on the remains, hope your changing the oil rail to the new type (I take it its petrol) as well

Head Gaskit oilrail and new bolts are about 120 Euro
