So I have a intermittent hdc light on every so often sometimes it will flicker on then off, sometimes stay on and others just won't come on at all. Hdc works as it should flashing and solid in reverse or first and goes thru the motions when used. Question is what components would give the light if loose connection cause that what it seems to be. Iv had it read and comes up c1151 can gearbox data failure

Any ideas or suggestions??

Also I was reading another post and I have the cream/ beige thermostat, should I change that to grey as soon as?

That's normal for a manual box, as there's no computer. The ABS ECU will work with auto or manual box, but is just programmed to ignore the missing data line from the manual, but it still flags a code.

Sounds like a dodgy switch, not making and braking cleanly. There are 3 switches in the system. The brake light switch, the first gear switch and the reverse light switch. So that's the place to start.

The grey PRT was specifically designed for the Freelander's K series engine. Is has a low opening temperature and a light bypass spring. You can often get away with the cream colour PRT, but must never use the black one.

Ok iv changed the first gear switch. Brake and reverse switch both work as they should but should I change them anyway? Any recommendations of brand for both?
OK so I can leave the cream thermosta in

Ok I have a another strange question, if u can see that pic, one is brake switch and other is sensor.
I have brake switch in mine but the other sensor hole is empty and what appear to be the sensor that goes into it is behind acceleratior in another hole.
Would that be the cause of my hdc light?
Has someone put it in wrong place

Different vehicle specifications call for different sensors to be fitted.

What engine, transmission and year is it?

It's 1.8 petrol k series with a manual gear box. I wouldn't mind I was wondering what the sensor behind acceleratior cause there no reason for it. Its fly by wire and there's no cruise control

The 1.8 K series isn't fly by wire. It has a conventional throttle cable, which pulls on the throttle plate directly.

The throttle pedal position sensor is there for the HDC system to function correctly. If that sensor isn't working, or the throttle cable has insufficient slack, then it will give a light (normally the TC light) and flag a code too.

That sounds like a power unit code, not an ABS code. What diagnostic are you using, and is it pulling codes off the ABS module?
+1

Who read your codes? Was it a LR (indie?) garage or a mate with an ODB dongle?

The standard ODB diags are to check the MIL light, specifically for emissions, but also other engine data. As such it just talks to the engine's ECU.

The engine ECU does not throw the HDC (or other ABS related) dash lights. They are thrown by the ABS ECU and you need a diagnostics kit that will talk to that using the comms protocol that it uses. This is vehicle specific - and quite proprietry on Freelander. So you need a Freelander specific diagnostics machine or take it to a garage that has one.

You may also need to read the codes while the light is lit - I'm not sure if the ABS ECU stores historic codes. There are also 3 different ABS system fitted to K Series Freelanders depending on the year it was produced.

By the way, I'm not sure how can you tell the brake and reverse switches are working properly if the fault is intermittent - it may be an intermittent fault in the switch - the diags will say.

Lol I don't do the whole mates with dongles.....
It was read in abs and engine with a up to date snap
I presumed by the simple calculation that when u put ur foot on the brake lights on, lights off
Put it in reverse, light on, light off
Tested both over plenty of repetitions

Anyway long story short, local LR dealer had brake switch in stock. Drove around for a hr and light hasn't reared its ugly head. Dismantled old one and can't say it was defective but hey what do I know
